Big Bear is a big, black, stout you can really sink your teeth into. The bold, roasty, caramel malt flavor is balanced by Centennial and Cascade hops. 2009 California State Fair – 2nd GOLD 2009 LA International Beer Competition – GOLD 2007 Great American Beer Festival® American-Style Stout – SILVER 2002 World Beer Cup - GOLD

Pours black from bomber with beige halo and vague bitter chocolate aroma. Medium-lean body and moderate flavor profile- of chocolate, debittered chocolate malt-- is too slight for the heft of the alcohol presence, not to mention the designated style. (This is not to say an Imperial stout has to be syrupy, over-the-top.) Will need to try this offering again. Turned out this was my fourth place choice (of four) in blind tasting for best stout in Sonoma County (strong field).

Bottle shared at CBC Clerkenwell during the Peter’s leaving do. Picked up somewhere about five years ago. Pours deep black with a large, frothy khaki head. The nose holds a bit of milk chocolate, burnt toffee, soft roast. Medium sweet flavor with lots of dry chocolate, toasted caramel, some tobacco, scorched earth, coffee beans. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Finishes with ample ashy roast, mild notes of oxidation, bittersweet cocoa, raisins. Drinking pretty well for the age but you can certainly detect the age.

Pours an opaque black with a nice 1 finger khaki colored head and good lacing. Aroma of dark roasted malt, coffee beans and herbal hops. Taste has nice dark chocolate and espresso with a bit of herbal hops on the finish. Mild bitterness on the palate after each sip. Good carbonation with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

Pours ruby-black with an average size light brown head. Aroma is very hoppy with roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and sweet. Taste is quite good-- hops, sweet malts, chocolate, roasted coffee, molasses and much more. Impressive!

Black with a mocha head. Aroma roast and sweet, dark fruit, sweet caramel, chocolate. Taste big and sweet, roasty, lots of chocolate, lots of coffee coming through later in palate and more chocolate (and some chalk) in finish. Very sweet. Good desert sipper, just sore of being cloying, but I probably wouldn’t drink more than one.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Alexey & Rafaela’s place. Thanks Tom L. Black with a small tan head. Lovely big chocolate aroma. Sweet flavor with chocolate and roast. Medium to full-bodied, quite rounded. Very good.

Shame I had a bit of a stuffy nose tonight. This one was nice and hoppy, which was a surprise. The cascade hops are probably to blame. Really sweet also though. Gonna keep this one short. I liked it

double deuce - nose is licorice, dark chocolate, and candy sugar. Sip adds a sincere yum. Aftertaste is what the coffee must have tasted like in Twin Peaks when "a fish took a liking to my percolator". Lots of flavor and decent taste, but the body is thin. Nice bitter finish that is complex. Odd aftertaste, if you didn’t get that from the fish comment.
