This Irish style dry stout is brewed with dark, roasted malts and fresh hops. Dark in color with bittersweet tones, this ale is smoother than its dark color suggests.

On tap @ Encinitas Ale House. Black pour with a dense tan head. Typical aromas of the style. Roasted malt, a bit of cocoa powder and ash, some earthy hops. Perhaps a hint of smoke. Certainly coffee. Flavor is bitter coffee, earthy hops, and roasted malt. Light cocoa powder and smoke. Dry finish, somewhat thin on the palate. Average.

Nitro draft at the brew pub as Nitro Black Bart. Didn’t seem all that imperial. Black color with a creamy tan head. Aroma is rather mocha. Flavors are coffee and chocolate; dark roast/toast malt; something of hop bitter. Finish is very smooth. Went quite well with prime rib.

On nitro at Rattle n Hum. Whipped up black coffee and cream appearance.Lots of lace. No overt fragerance. Creamy mouthfeel as expected, and notes of chocolate. Decent stout, not too dry but not too complex.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Dark black beer with a thick creamy nitro head. Really lovely looking pint. Aroma is deep and cocoaish. Dark roasted coffee and a light sweetness through the middle of the palate. Lightly earthy bitterness but with a nice cocoa/coffee complexity. Sweet with a soft milk chocolate character. Long roasty finish. Tasty stuff.

An imperial stout? What the...!?! Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Faint chocolate aroma. Watery palate. Chocolate taste but a fairly one dimensional beer. Not as bitter as expected for a dry stout.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Pours a nice deep dark brown almost pitch black with a nice nitro lasting head and good lace. Aroma is nutty toasty, good full chocolate and a nice light fruitiness. Flavor is toasty, good roast- light coffee, and good dark chocolate with almost a nutty chocolate fruitiness- light dry acrid slightly acidic finish. Nice dry stout.
