Bomber. Pours pitch black with a nice small foamy head that lingers nicely, leaves some webbing too. Aroma is mostly piney hops with some light roasted coffee, light chocolate, and grapefruit too. Taste has a surprisingly juicy hop taste up front with lots of pine and citrus. Finish is moderately bitter with light coffee and chocolate to complement the hops. Medium body, mouthfeel has a nice oiliness. Overall, this is a really good Black IPA.

Draught at Cole’s in Buffalo. Black, with a small, sticky brown head. Not much going on in the nose, but that may be a draught thing. The flavour is earthy, gritty, with some herbal hops and a touch of chocolate from the malt. Body is a tad thin, but that may be a draught thing as well. Okay, but I’d like to try it from a bottle.

22oz bottle. Pours clear dark ruby black with a medium creamy brown head that dissipates with nice lacing. Aroma is hoppy - grapefruit, touch of pine and some underlying coffee. Flavor is definitely IPA - citrus hoppy with underlying roasted malts, perhaps molasses. Lightly sweet and medium bitter. Medium body, slightly oily mouthfeel. Quite nice.

Serving: 22 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours jet black with a dense tan head. The nose has big, piney hops and a strong roasted malt note. Those piney hops blast you on the tongue along with a slight earthiness, but give way to slight burnt and dark, roasted malt notes. A slight black coffee note emerges as it warms. Dry and lasting finish. Very well done and recommended.

On tap at Falling Rock in June. Pours black with small amber head and some lace. Aroma of floral hops, burnt malts, rich malts. Moderate mouthfeel and carbonation. Flavors of dark roasted malts, coffee, carob, dark chocolate. Overall very tasty, full bodied, rich with some bitter notes. Lovely overall.

The flavor mimics the positive aroma. The malt is dark in flavor, but without any burnt elements. I’m reminded of unsweetened cocoa (no milk). The bitterness is more pronounced in the swallow and lasts a while in the aftertaste, but it isn’t overbearing. The body leans to the thin side, but the carbonation is appropriate. Overall, this is an extremely well-crafted, well-balanced beer. It would be very easy to keep drinking this one all afternoon.
