3.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
One of the better black IPA's, but I really have to be in the mood for it. Smells great, just too much of a bitter aftertaste for me.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz bottle. Dark brown color. Thin khaki head. Couple dots of lace. Bigger body. Lighter, kind of crisp carbonation. Awesome aroma, pretty much exactly what I want from a black IPA. Good bitter dark chocolate, dark roast, nice coffee malt flavors, along with some big earthy, herbal, piney hop. Good moderate to stronger bitter taste, minimal sweet. Awesome black IPA... Good balance of citrus, nutty herbal hop, and roasty herbal chocolate... Def. my kind of black IPA. Assertively hoppy, satisfyingly hoppy. Love it.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark mahogany pour with a small latte head. More like a hoppy porter than IPA. Loads of burnt caramel, oats, grain, roasted coffee, and chocolate. Mild citrus and pine punch. Meh.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a black color with small, finger size off white head that just sits atop the beer and slowly disappears. Aromas of fresh earthy hops with a slight hint of roasted malt. The flavors are of the opposite. The roasted malt comes to the forefront followed by a slight bitterness that leaves the palate with a barely noticeable stickiness.

Not usually an ipa drinker, but this is a deliciously caramelled black ipa. Slightly hoppy.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, roasted grain), moderately hoppy (resin, grapefruit).
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, watery/creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
A pretty ordinary and uninspiring example, but ok. Very simple aroma with just the basics for the style. Decent enough balance, but a bit sour. Meh.

Nice dark brown pour with a cream colored head. Good intergration of roasted malts and the hops. Seamless to be exact. Very nice beer.

220z bomber - Greatly enjoyed this rendition of Races # 5. This ale has some smokey qualities that I find delightful. ABV is dangerously kicked up from original as well. I approve of this experiment.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black, with a light brown head, this beer tastes more sweet than your average black IPA, and with more alcohol than you’d expect as well. It seems to be lacking enough hop character in my opinion to be called an IPA, and although roasted malts are in the flavor they’re not overpowering. Normally it’s either one or the other... hoppy or roasted, and sometimes you’ll get something in-between. This seems to be in-between and off to the side. It has an earthy, musky nose with a similar mouth feel. It actually seems more like a thick, malty strong ale than a black IPA. Well-balanced in all respects. Me gusta!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Proof. Black pour with a white head. Aroma of rich roastiness, coffee traces of bitter chocolate, piney and earthy hoppiness. Bold roast, chocolate, pine and citrus hops throughout the flavor. Pretty rich body on the thicker side, definitely walking the line of Stout territory.
