Enjoyed it as anything from Bear Republic but not sure I'd change from Racer 5 except for something different. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours am opaque brownish black on tap with thick tan head that leaves great lacing. Aroma of strong west coast hops, piney and resinous, with a solid toasted malt back end. Taste follows, nice balance and lasting bitter finish. Great stuff.

Tap at Big Hunt. Pours cola with some head. Nose is roasted coffee and aromas show some vanilla and earthy bitterness. Tastes are light sweet and medium to heavy bitterness. Fully body almost creamy. Lovely.

Bottle @ Lost Dog - McLean. Pours clear dark brown with a medium, frothy light tan head, medium retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate and coffee malt, dates and raisins with earthy hops. Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness with supporting malt, dark fruits and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Bottle. Definitely black with a nice citrus note. Very easy to drink. Dark malts noticeable, but blended nicely with the hops. Strong aroma and long bitter finish.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown black with a big creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted chocolate malts with some rye notes.

The flavor is some sweet chocolate malts with a lot of acidic roast bitterness with some pine. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a decent black IPA.

A vigorous pour into my New Belgium goblet produces a three finger thick, lightly brown tinged, dark tan colored head. The beer is a concentrated brown, not quite black colored head. The aroma smells of vibrant, fruity hops and toasted / roasted malt character; lychee, guava, and candied tangelo zest, which is backed by whole grain, toasted brown crackers, coffee liquor, and bitter roasted character.

The beer has ample hop flavors with lots of lychee, floral concentrated peach notes, burnt tangerine character, Curacao orange peel, a touch of herbaceous pine character, as well as a firm bitterness that is accentuated by the smooth roast character. Lingering, though light, roast notes, some whole grain brown bread (amply toasted of course), and a wholesome, slightly burnt cracker character. The body is nice and light, thought it does have some heft to it, enough to carry the vibrant hop character at least.

This is quite a nice Black IPA; the hop character is quite vibrant, fruit laden, and just expansive, with just enough dark malt character to support the hops, but not get too intrusive. This is really just fresh and hoppy, and I am enjoying this quite a bit more than I expected.

On tap at ACBF 6/1/2013 Hoppy roasty black brew with light citrus and dankness. Nice brew.

Poured at The Top in Gainesville. Black pour with super thin white head. Aroma of dark roasted malt and pine hops. Pretty straight forward aroma. Flavor follows aroma exactly, buy with a thickness to the beer I was not expecting. Hops cut through the thick, somewhat chocolatey, malt making it pretty easy drinking. Nicely done black ipa, but outside of Wookey Jack this style can only excite me so much.

22 oz bottle from Wilburs. Almost black with a tan head and lacing. The aroma is roasted malts and citric hops. Similar flavor, pretty straightforward with medium bitterness and a piney finish. Medium body with a soft creamy feel. Good but slightly disappointing.
