Bomber bottle of the 2013. Pours black, tan head. Citrus and grass aroma. Taste is clear coffee, malt after taste. More a slightly hopped porter than a "Black IPA" whatever a "Black IPA" is.

Bottle from Healthy Spirits. Aroma and flavor of a medium-hopped IPA with a decidedly mild porter malt aspect, very much like Fullers. Very clean palate, and there's little to no lingering bitterness. Good carb and lacing. Good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Spring 2013 release. Bottle. More of a Stout then an IPA. Overtones of dark fruit, subtle rum raisin, roasted malt and chocolate, dominate the nose and palate, with simply an underlying bitter hopping in the finish. It's good, though not what I was expecting with 'IPA' on the label from this hop friendly brewery. An enjoyable dark ale that should of been released early in the winter, and not at the end of spring. Racer X should be the spring seasonal IMO. --- tasted while on a long journey to understand the world around me...

I really like the blend of hops and malt and the mild taste of cocoa. There is no terrible after taste and holds flavor whether it is cold or at room temperature. I could drink this all year around. It is a shame its a seasonal beer but sometimes you have to wait for a good thing.

Was expecting more from this one. Hop level is good but the balance with the dark malts is off. Tastes more like an over hopped porter. This is a hard style to hit right.

Bottle @ The BeerMongers... Poured black with a moderate khaki head. Smooth and balanced. Didn’t lean too far on the hops or the malt. Roast was in there and complimented the floralness of the hops nicely. Some coffee and cocoa too. Green, earthy hop tones and balancing sweetness so the bitterness was just right.

Some floral inky hop notes along w a grwat deal of dark roast chocolate. Seemed almost like a ligjt imperial stout. Black pour tan head. Flavors of dark roast moderate dark malt sweetness herbal floral hops in moderation and more dry dark roast. Medium body like a light imperial stout. Interesting take on black ipa.

From a bomber onto an oversized wine glass. Pours a moderately dark black with frothy white head. Mix of grassy hops and dry clay malt. Mouthfeel is pretty light and dry. Very porter-like. Taste is mainly light/mild pine hops mixed with kiln dried dark malt. The tast is very well balanced and extremely subdued. Not what I'm looking for in a black IPA. This is very much a well hopped porter. Decent but I wouldn't recommend. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle I drank myself sitting out side in the driveway as my 4 year old son Jack sleept in the car. Pours very dark brown to black. nose is unmalted barley, anise & cocoa. first sip is similar with tons of anise which dominates the citrus hop or Iwoould have probably liked this beer more. finish is slightly bitter orange peal and burnt sugar. not bad.

Faint roast aroma of cocoa nibs. Black with no foam. Nice coffee overtones with some roasted caramel, espresso and chocolate notes. Subtle hop bitterness on the finish. Overall, a tad disappointing but still flavorful and drinkable. Pretty basic roast/rich flavors with subtle hops. I’d give this a B rating.
