Bomber from Capone’s. Pours hazy dark brown toward black with 2-finger well-retained khaki head and a lot of floaties. Nose is roasty dark malt, cacao, resiny hops. Tastes roasty dark malty, with notes of cacao, resiny hops, an overall high IBU level, and a crisp hoppy finish with more notes of roasty malt.

Bomber pours black with ruby edges and a tan head. Nose of pine, citrus. Taste starts with ample bitterness. pine, citrus, and hop resin take command only giving way to some moderate roast and chocolate on the finish. Yum, Yum.

From the tap. Pours dark brown with a healthy dark fine head; lacing is good. Roasted, toasty and chocolate aroma with a sweet initial taste, converting quickly to a coffee / chocolate and rather bitter lingering finish.

Black pour with a singer finger head. Lots of lace. Grain aroma with just a little citrus. Taste is raisins and roast. I was really surprised that this wasn’t hopped more. Medium mouth.

On Tap at expensive hipster bar in Boston. Not great here. Watery and a bit of charcoal and lacking the hop bite I expect from Bear republic IPAs.

Appearance: Dark black/brown with a dense brown head. Aroma: pine resin with hints of mocha. Flavor: Malty with a moderate hop bitterness. Surprised that as dark as it is there is very little roasted malt character. The finish is appropriately bitter for the style. Palate: Medium to full bodied with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation. Overall: While I am not a fan of this ill-conceived style, it is interesting all the same.

Aroma of grapefruit, slight grass, and chocolate malt. Pours black with a bright white bubbly head. Taste is kind of subdued but solid with citrus and chocolate. Sokay. Not my fav.

Dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Rosted malts and resin nose. Light body. lots of hops. Basically a Racer 5 with roasted malts. Slightly oily resiny bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours a fairly dark black with thick cream lacing. Sweet brown sugar and lightly citrus aroma. Overall this is way overbalanced on the roasted side. More like a lightly hopped smoked porter. Not a great example of the style, but fairly enjoyable. Just not what I was expecting.
