Draft at Monks. Very dark brown with a slight frothy tan head. Thicker body than I expected. Feels more like a chocolate stout. Hop bite balances the sweetness. Good, but does not read as a Black IPA. Balanced but not that complex.

Dark brown pour with a tan head. Big pine and grapefruit aromas. Roasted malt, chocolate, and sweet caramel and molasses. Pretty simplistic aroma. The flavor is moderately bitter. Lots of roast, pine, and grapefruit notes. Some hints of chocolate, molasses, caramel, and a touch of coffee.

I don’t know why, but I had this on tap at Lord Hobo. It was during the same time as my Boulevard Hibiscus Gose review. Pours a dark brown resembling black: trim khaki head. Smells and tastes of roast, blackberry preserves, juniper berries, grass trimmings, traditional yeast, and ginger. Smooth. alcohol well hidden. Another exciting beer from Bear Republic.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bomber from Beer Run. Pours a nearly pitch black color with auburn highlights at the edges that indicate some clarity in the beer. Large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of vegetal, herbal hops with roasted malts and a bit of a nutty note. The taste is herbal, citrus, resin hops with roasted malts and a faint sweetness. Medium bodied.

a black ipa that is more on the ipa side. Pretty solid dark black color. Aroma is slightly astringent zest but also some light chocolate and cigar wrapper. Maybe even a light wild berry tea quality to the smell. The taste is pretty steady bitter with jut a hinted chocolate note. A good style example.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from City Beer. Pours near black with a thick tan head and a citrus and treacle aroma. There is a smooth dark molasses and pine flavor with a dry finish. Sweeter than many other black IPAs.

Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted sweet malt, floral/pine hops, & citrus; Flavor of slight roasted sweet malt, caramel, pine hops, some chocolate, and citrus; Finish is fairly bitter; Very nicely balanced; Somewhat underrated - I enjoyed this one.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black with big, foamy, tan head, good legs / Mild, bright nose of roast grain, tobacco, coffee, citrus / Light to medium body, some sweetness but quite astringent, toasty and acidic, with very bitter finish / Flavors of burnt coffee, caramel, lemon, orange peel, weed / Excessive bitterness detracts from otherwise fine black ipa.

Great pour, smells fruity, taste is awesome, really hoppy, you get that IPA taste, but just the touch of dark flavor that makes it an awesome beer. I am really impressed, one of the better black IPAs I have had.
