Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, roasted grain), moderately hoppy (resin, grapefruit). Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. A pretty ordinary and uninspiring example, but ok. Very simple aroma with just the basics for the style. Decent enough balance, but a bit sour. Meh.

[Bottle (660ml)] Pours a very dark amber-brown with an average size long-lasting frothy beige head. Some minimal lacing on the glass. Nice aroma is malty, chocolaty and hoppy first, followed by dark fruit and a hint of spices. Interesting flavour, must be the hops they chose: malty -- sweet and roasty -- and chocolaty but also slightly spicy from the hops, along with some fruit, coffee, a bit of alcohol and a moderate bitter finish. Medium bodied. Not great, but a pretty good, interesting version of the style.

PorterPounder (6721) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JUL 16, 2013
Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 22 oz bomber. Dark brownish-black pour with a nice khaki colored thickish head. Aroma has some dairy accents, a touch of spruce, some brief tobacco notes. Flavor has some cigar tobacco notes, hints of dark chocolate, some minty accents, a touch of citrus bitterness. some trailing earthy potting soil in the back end. Nice textured thick mouthfeel. Very solid

Bottle:   Deep cola, moderate frothy tannish head, nice lacing.   Pale roast, slight lactose, with some pasture like bitterness on the nose.   Smooth sweet and roasty hoppiness on the tongue.   Thankfully the pasture doesn’t come across on the tongue, only pale roast and some sweet citrusy hops.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Nice balance, a sweeter example which is great with the roasted malts.   Enjoyable!

Ruby black color with lasting light tan head. Dry chocolate, dusty blackened malt aromas with floral, pine hops. medium body, average carbonation. Dry black malt, semi-sweet chocolate flavors with some pine, floral hoppage, and light roast---good.

Bottle. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, butterscotch. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a rich hop bitter, molasses, sweet fruit palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Not a great deal of life and lacks the defining black IPA hop character, but a good beer all the same.

Taste: Toasted malts, grapefruit and pine
Nice. Lots of roast in the aroma, more of a IPA in the taste.

Dark heavy brown pour, pretty much black, with a thin light beige sticky head. The nose is odd with something like roasted mushrooms and sautéed green bell peppers and an artisanal Italian mushroom sauce. Also a bit roasty, but really it smells like an appetizer at a fine restaurant. Not sure how to feel about that. The flavor is a bit more beery with some dark grains, a bit of roast, and an almost rye-like hoppiness with medium bitterness. Most of the bitter comes from the roast, so the hops are kinda quiet. But overall it’s not very bitter. Kinda quiet for a California BIPA actually. Semi-sweet and just kinda middle-of-the-road. A good into to the style though. Not scary aggressive.

Dusty bottle from Greenwood. Hopefully this hasn’t been sitting around for aeons. The pour’s deep chestnut brown with a medium tan head. The aroma’s burnt brown sugar, burnt coffee rinds. Some peach and grapefruit. Brash citrus. Cantaloupe. The taste is charred grain, coffee beans, dark chocolate. Bright orange peel. Loads of citrusy hops on the bitter finish. Chocolate orange ice cream. Medium body, smooth carbonation. Very tasty.
