This was shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. It pours black, with a fine bubbled tan head. Light lacing. Nose of citrus, pine, and floral hops. Medium body. Smooth mouth feel. Flavor is burnt malts, and the three hops flavors....citrus, pine and floral. Moderately bitter finish. This goes down really smooth and is easy drinking. Good balance. Excellent Black IPA. Like this one a lot.

Bottle thanks to wyzzywyz22, cheers mate. Poured almost black with a medium creamy tan head. Aroma has a big lick of coffee, grapefruit, roasted malts, dark chocolate. Flavour is lovely and hoppy, roasted malt, chocolate, pine. Well balanced. Great beer.

Hanging with JoeT at the brewery on Aug 9, 2011 for my birthday. I was more focused on the company than the notes, but these’ll do until I get back there this summer and do it right. Listed as Black IPA. Dark black with red tints. Taste is big sweet hops, but no bitterness of hops. Lots of roast malt. Nose is lightly sweet hops. Bit of licorice and chocolate. Bitter gooey back. Liked this one a lot.

On draft at Tap 25. It pours dark brown with a tan head. The aroma has lots of coffee and citrus. The flavor is heavy on the citrus and lighter notes of roasted coffee beans. A bit of fruitiness comes in before a big roasted finish. A very good black IPA.

Excellent BIPA. Lovely tropical fruit nose. Good body. Nice balance - much like Racer 5. Chocolate, a little roast and some big citrus flavours. A little bit too astringent for me in the aftertaste, but otherwise top notch.

Draft @ OBF ’12. Solid BIPA with lighter roasted and chocolate flavors then many of the same style...which I like.

Squealer. Pours pitch black with a small offwhite head. Aroma has a sweet grapefuit/grassy note and also a hint of coffee bean. Big bitter hit straight up in the flavour from the hops and the bitter espresso backing. I do get some hop flavour although the malt seems to dominate. Very good beer i would love to try it fresh to see how much more hop presence there is.

On tap at GABF 2012. Pours a deep mahogany color with a medium grey head. A nose of bitter hops and chocolates. The flavor is bitter dark chocolate and hops, lingering sweet roast and coffee. Very good.

22oz bottle, courtesy of Bear Republic. Thanks, folks! Pours a deep, dark cola-brown color; creamy, sizable light-cocoa head: tiny bubbles along with solid retention and lacing; really nice pour on this. Aroma offers up cocoa powder and a bit of chocolate-covered caramel (nothing heavy) that quietly serves as the backdrop to a modest grapefruity and slightly pithy hoppiness; solid, lean, hop-forward composition. Medium body with moderate CO2, tiny bubbles; compared to something like New Glarus Black Top (wherein the hop bitterness takes over and makes one quickly forget the darker malt additions) this is a bit more charismatic when it comes to the darker malts, with distinct notes of cocoa and lightly rounded chocolate, and a bit more restrained in the overall bitterness; still, this is one of the better new releases to come out of Bear Republic as of late, and that hop bitterness slowly does begin to build and make one forget the darker hue; definitely doesn’t descend into the toasted marshmallow, milk chocolate sweetness of others; firmly bitter, and a really enjoyable, repeatable pint. Medium-length finish of grapefruit rind and a bit of lingering cocoa and chocolate; still on the dry side.
