Tap at Rattle N Hum. Deep brown beer with ruby highlights. The nose is nicely chocolatey with a heavy coffeeish character. Quite a nice brightness. Dry, but there is a decent malt complexity through the middle of the palate. Lingering bright cocoaish character. It’s quite nice.

Bear Republic Promo event at Blind Tiger. Nitro pour. Pours a deep charcoal almost black with a nice creamy tan nitro head- good lace. Aroma is earthy, light nutty chocolate and ok roast with hint of oxidation and paper. Flavor is nutty, earthy mineral, chocolate, earthy grassy hops, light pine, and hint of roast with anise kick in the end- smooth.

On draft, nitro tap, at Bear Republic Brewing (Healdsburg, CA): Pours a dark reddish black with a creamy off-white head. Distinct honey in the nose, along with other aromatic notes of ripened dark fruit, caramel, molasses, roasted sweet malts, and lighter hops. Bites of lightly roasted fruit, lots of smoked malts, sugary coffee, and wood. Lightly carbonated, light altogether feel. Sweet bitter finish. Drinkability: Light, but enjoyable. Pairing: BBQ prime rib, smoked ham. Rebuy: Sure. #369 on 31032010, DG.

Served on nitro at the brewery. Dark brown with a creamy beige head. Touch of toast and mineral in the aroma, but mostly blah. Mineral and dry flavor with some toast and chocolate. Watery texture. Way to much mineral and not enough malt to get past it.

On draft at the brewpub in Healdsburg. This came in the glass a brown color with a foamy tan head and left nice lacing rings. Nose is of coffee and roasted malts, with chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium and the overall texture is light and a bit watery but nevertheless smooth. Flavor is dominate by the roasted malts and bitter chocolate but the floral and grassy hops show up in the dry finish. Overall a smooth and easy drinking porter.
