Our Hop Rod Rye, aged three months in Alexander Valley Chardonnay barrels, and fermented with 5% chardonnay juice.

on tap at bear republic. nose of grape with a bit of hop. very nice reddish brown with thin head. taste of wine and oak with a nice hop finish. the dryness of the rye is still there. i really like this even more then regular hop rod.

Deliciously hoppy and creamy at the same time. Flavor becomes bolder as it warms. Good.

One of my all time favs, great pour and aroma, brown color, very hoppy, bitter, fruity, and malty. Has a great balance of citrus and bitterness, as well as a bit of pine/stickiness to it as well. Nice complexity, good flow, refreshing and flavorful.

Very bitter and hoppy with a slight sweetness that resembles an oaky finish. Aftertaste is bitter and slightly oxidized (perhaps even metallic).

might this be the first barrel aged beer to ever DECREASE the alcohol content? Haha. Anyway, reddish brown pour. Aroma of rye, toast, and wine. Flavor of sweet toast, tanginess, caramel and grapes. Finishes with tangy wood, toast, and char. Medium bodied and creamy. Interesting, but I dunno. Maybe not the best barrel or beer for the job.

Tap at Bear Republic. Reddish-brown color with a small off-white head. Aroma of white grapes, rye, malt, and citrus/pine hops. Flavor is like a somewhat muted Hop Rod Rye - rye, malt, wood, and citrusy hops - with a very noticeable Chardonnay presence. Fairly full palate with a somewhat dry finish. Very good.

Tap at brewpub. As far removed from the mess of BA Red Rocket as you can get. Pours a nice reddish brown with a thin white head. The aroma is of grapes and some citrus and pine hop notes with a bit of oak. Flavor is very vinous as well with a piney hop finish. Interesting beer, definitely tasty though.

Nice red color with an oak wine and hops aroma. Smooth velvetty palate. Sweet wine toffee and brown sugar taste. Excellent.

Draught at the brewpub, 8%abv. Amber with a creamy head. Malty, caramel, yeasty, and woody aroma. The flavor is vinous and lightly tart with light malt, and finishes citric, bitter, and hoppy. The wine quality its doing a lot here, and the combo with the hoppy base and acidity is pretty odd. I would give this another go though.

Draft. Rich mahogony beer with a nice light tan head. Light oak, light wine aroma with light malt and light hops - more subtle than I would have thought. Big chardonnay flavor with malt, a light woodsiness, and some hops (though much less than what I would expect from Hop Rod Rye). Medium-plus bodied. Chardonna, oak, and malt linger. Hops not as present.
