Commercial Description:
This copper colored beer is a blend of Racer 5 and Red Rocket, and is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain, giving a characteristic spicy clove aroma. The American hop bitterness and aroma balances the Belgian character. This hybrid beer is so unusual that we decided to call it Crazy Ivan, after the unexpected left turn we took in making (and naming) it. Dive, Dive!

Tap at Blind Tiger. Deep amber beer topped by a thick white head. Aroma is quite spicy with some fairly smoky phenolics. Palate comes across a little bit thin with a soft earthy bitterness complementing the light amber malt sweetness. Minerally and clovey flavour. Moderate bitterness. It’s okay, but not great.

Draft @ Falling Rock. Strange nose resembles horseradish and juniper, that’s the peppery/spicy character of the yeast as least. Deep red color with an off-white head. Somewhat thick, very syrupy, moderately full. Caramel malt is overbearing, soggy, bready, overly sweet, and doesn’t seem to work very well with the yeast strain. Interesting enough.

Draft at Smokehouse in Columbus. Poured clear brown color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate tart citrus hop and earthy aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture. Medium spicy bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration.

Draft at Sacramento Brewing Company. Very dark, but clear, brown color with a significant creamy beige head. Aroma seems to be resin hop. Medium plus body with creamy carbonation. Flavor seemed to start grapefruit then turned into fruit and pine. The flavor is smooth and massive. The finish is dry, fruity and wonderful. My mouth probably isn’t good enough for such a good beer.
