Brewed with malt and yeast from Cologne, Germany, this hybrid ale is slightly fruity like an ale, but fermented and cold conditioned like a lager.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Hazy golden pour. The nose is very clear with a kiss of light crackery graininess. A bit of straw and a kiss of light fruit. The beer itself is really quite dry and fresh tasting. There is very little in the way of hop aroma or flavour. Warming brings up a touch more soft pear estery character. Seemingly flawless.

Draft at Capone’s. Pours hazy golden with a finger or so of clingy white head. Nose is pale malt, apricotty fruit, white peppery spicy. Tastes pale malty, with a big apricotty fruity and honey flavor, and substantial hops. This is one of the better examples of this style I have come across.

On draft at the Livermore Saloon. It pours a nice golden color with a white head. The aroma has some nice fresh grains, a little bread and lemongrass, floral and orange hops. The flavor is crisp and bready with lemon and orange hop character in the flavor and a bit more noble spicy bitterness in the finish. Great light yet creamy mouthfeel. A stellar American style Kolsch.

Had on draft at the brewery. Bready malts, fruity, slight orange, floral, soft and delicate.

Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours translucent gold with a white head. Aroma is a bit fruit backed by bread. Near med body. Flavor is enough citrus and fruit to mostly cover up the malt. Drinks more tasty than many of the style.

Shit I hate adding beers when I’m buzzed. That should say kolsch. Clear golden with a fizzy white head sweet malty aroma with a homey comb taste. Not bad.

Tap: slight haze on a light-yellow pour small white head. Aroma is very pilsener-like with light grass, light bisquit and small whiff of lemon. Flavor is much the same with grass, bisquit, a light lemon grass and a high carbonation tang. This beer seems more pilsener than kolsch, except for the slight tartness, still nice flavors and good drinking.

Sampler at the brewery. Golden pour. Sweet aroma of mild citrus and grass. Flavor is similar. Solid example of the style.

On tap @ the brewpub. Hazy orange with a small island of an off-white head. Floral (flower petal-y) sterling hops up front with their earthy backnote. Also there is some biscuit and sweet malts. Flavor is much the same with a hint of corn, though doesn’t seem to be in a crappy adjunct way. Finishes semi-dry with bitterness around a 2. Moderate prickly carbonation with a light to medium body. Pretty drinkable, and not too shabby.

Gold orange pour. Aroma of caramel, grain and bread. Tastes pretty clean with caramel, hay, and an overall tanginess. Finishes dry with a bread aftertaste. Light and crisp. I couldn’t help but think this is more of a kolsch than an abbey dubbel, haha.
