EithCubes (2139), Indiana, USA Nov 5, 2009 Bottle, a 12ozer after passing up many bombers. Light citrus along with Big Pine, toffee, caramel in the nose, a hint of grainy rye in with chocolate chip nibs. Some cookie dough. Dark ruby-walnut pour with significant carbonation and a perfect blanket of rocky tan head. Full, viscous body introduces some resin underneath the penetratingly earthy caramel-and-toffee milkshake, and there’s some citric tang underneath the lasting but pleasant bitterness. Dry, woody, very salty. Alcohol warmth after about six-eight ounces but otherwise no means of detection. An adult beverage for adults, big score for something interesting in the otherwise murky waters of strong American ales. Grizzle (44), Lawrence, Kansas, USA Oct 30, 2009 12 oz. -> snifter. Pours a somewhat opaque mocha, with orange-red highlights. Off-white head, which dissipated fairly quick, leaving much of the top thinly covered. Less-than-expected lacing. Smells of rye, anise, alcohol, caramel, and hops. The rye malt certainly helps to cut the bitterness normally associated with IIPA, and contributes a nice burnt caramel to the flavor, without adding an unnecessary sweetness. A great beer. savnac (392), Palmer, Alaska, USA Oct 30, 2009 12 oz bottle. Light brown with a tiny tan head that dissipates fast. Sweet sugary aroma with spicy rye, citrus and bubblegum. Sweet flavor with a bitterness that fades in and then back to a sweet finish. Thick medium body with mild carbonation and a syrupy mouth feel. Very interesting IIPA, the rye adds great body and creates a unique aroma and flavor. patrickfannon (271), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 18, 2009 Bottle. 25.4 oz. Pours hazy amber, with a foamy, pillowy white head. Amazing lacing throughout. Aroma of hops, citrus, hay, pepper, and hints of bananna, clove, and honey. Full body. Tangy, bitter, crisp mouthfeel. Strong, slow-burning finish. Excellent IPA. Highly recommended. Prometheus (97), Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA Oct 18, 2009 Bottle from Sams in Durham.
Nice red color with a decent head.
Hoppy aroma.
Strong hops with some malt at the finish.
Pretty nice, actually. watson1977 (242), , Pennsylvania, USA Oct 15, 2009 pours a nice ruby color with a medium light tan head...some sediment. aroma is lightly bready and has notes of tea, pine and spicy hops but is not that strong...almost too subtle. flavor is very earthy at first with agressive bitter hops and then some caramely rye malt. mouthfeel is very oily and the lingering finsh is very bitter and dry. i wonder if my bottle was a bit old hence the lack of an agressive aroma... bsjay (54), Oregon, USA Oct 15, 2009 Beautiful red, with a creamy head. Surpisingly hoppy and not as dry as you’d expect in a rye. I liked this alot.
