Not a bad price...$2.99 for a bomber at Discount Liquors, Milwaukee. And definitely worth it for that price. Chestnut brown and deep red with a clinging, off-white, even luxurious head, the first sips entered my mouth to a standing ovation by my taste buds, as they were prodded from their seats by a lovely froth. My nose had already been bristling at attention from the generous hop aroma, with caramel and a hint of hazelnut-infused chocolate. The flavor has much more of the rye; I haven’t been very good at detecting rye in the beers I’ve had, but this was as clear as any of them. Still, it doesn’t bang you over the head, but has a rounded malt base with some distinctive hops, producing a long bitter finish with a rather dry character. On balance, I think I don’t really care for rye beers that much; I’ve had a good number of them now, and never have they struck me as that impressive. Still, this is well composed, and after a bomber of 8% it is hard not to be happy with the $3 I spent on this!

bottle thanks to larry pitonka. dark copper color with substantial head and carbonation. assertive hoppy rye aroma, with some caramel sweet notes as well. some spicy rye. whoa, this beer is a kick in the ass. lots of northwest hops, and a full body of syrupy malt. superb beer, like a gigantic mutated spiced IPA.

Pours a brown amber, with a copious white head. Decent head lingering. Cascade-family hops aroma. Sharp and fruity. Some residual currant-like aromas from the malt as well. Full strong ale mouthfeel. The rye character is also most evident in the mouthfeel, adding a certain clean smoothness. IPA levels of hoppiness in the nose, leading to a series of malt flavors. The sweetness of these malts are blunted somewhat, an effect I credit to the rye. Some astringency and bitterness lingers in the finish. Listed as a strong ale, but I feel it could be just as home in the IPA catagory.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2008 Really great beer. Good underlying malt character with a touch of sweetness contrasted with some fairly aggressive, but precise hops flavor. Good bitterness with fantastic aromatics. Might not recognize the rye if it was not on the label, but it does add interest. Very multi-layerd and nuanced, firm but not assaulting. A fun beer to try.

Poured an amber color. Big floral and earthy hop aroma. Smells like amarillo dry hop. Malty with a full hop flavor and bitter finish. Great flavor and taste.

4/10/05: Bottle.
Fragrant nose of malt, raisin and alcohol. Smells very strong. Body is brown to garnet. Off-white head with a small amount of lace. Malts and hops to taste. (Possibly dry-hopped)? X-S amount of pine tree flavor too. Long, bitter finish.

I thought this was more of an IPA than a strong ale. Big hoppy/floral nose with the undertones of something I can’t immediately discern. Huge thick head over a dark reddish color. Nice mouthfeel with a huge hoppy flaveo and bitter aftertaste.

On tap, Map Room Chicago. Could not easily detect rye here. It was hidden under all the hops, which made this beer finish extremely dry and bitter. Decent brown coloring, light head, medium body. Not the change of pace I was looking for, but enjoyable nonetheless.

2005 Great Arizona Beer Festival. Poured dark amber with a good head. Aroma is all hops and citrus. Flavor is strong on the hops and easy drinking. Good stuff!
