A high gravity IPA brewed with 18% rye malt. Hop Rod Rye has a floral hop aroma and subtle caramel notes with a slightly earthy and spicy rye character. 2009 California State Fair – GOLD 2003 California State Fair – GOLD 2002 Real Ale Festival (Chicago) – GOLD

Bottle, Dark red and brown color, white fluffy head that gets thin. Lacing lasts the whole way down. Malty and hoppy aroma. Smooth to me for this style of beer, very drinkable. I noticed the alcohol as it started to warm. Finished hoppy and fruity especially as it warms. Very pleasant strong ale. Seemed like a mild version of AB.

Nice hoppy flavor, but is soured by some overroasted notes. Good color and body, but wasn’t anything special.

Bottle: Dark coppery color, large fluffy sand head that lasts, super sticky lacing, minor bits of sediment float about.   Big malty nose, spikes of hop, a bit of citrus peel.   Very smooth, and well balanced, combination of malts and hop.   Perhaps even a touch of tobacco in this one.   For an American Strong Ale it is quite easy to put back, especially for being 8%.   Great body, moderate mouthfeel.   Finishes very clean, slightly earthy, with a semi-sweet citrus like bitterness that lingers.   Good stuff!

I LOVE THIS BEER! It is exactly what I want from a strong ale. Deep copper red color, nice long lasting head, moderately strong hop finish, and plenty of alcohol content. I actually like this one a little better than Arrogant Bastard. Don’t get me wrong the AB is great, but this one is a little smoother and a little less hoppy.

22oz bottle obtained in a trade with Bluedevil0206 - Thanks James! Pours a deep copper color with a nice tan head. Aroma is hoppy, grapefruit and rye. Flavor has much malt, and rye flavor to back up the strong hop notes. This is a solid ale. On the palate this is full bodied and very pleasing in the mouth. Quite creamy and smooth. Finishes with a nice bitter dry finish that keeps you coming back for more. The strong alcohol content cannot be found while sipping this beer. I liked this one alot..

Coutesy of JFURYCAT. Very tasty IPA. Sweet hop nose with some rye hints. Flavor was weel hopped with a great malt balance. The rye flavor was a nice supplement making this much different than most ipas.

Bouteille Spirit Haus, Mai 2005.

Pretty large and frothy head. Reduces to some very impressive lacing. Big hops aroma with plenty of malts and a bit of acidic bitterness. Little spruce in there. Color is a dark mahagony brown and crystal clear. Flavor is big and full bodied with huge malts, a nice roastyness, hint of alcohol, good hops presence to offset the malts and a hint of dryness from the rye. Finish is sweet and creamy with a strong bitterness but not long lasting. A very good american strong ale. Kind of reminds me of Arrogant Bastard.

Soft brown color and a short head. Aroma is much like an American pale ale but with more of a soft, malty caramel element and some rye graininess. The Pacific hops are prominent in the flavor but mix with the rye, fruity malt and alcohol bite to appear as if this is some sort of black & tan with rye whiskey. This beer has a very sharp palate yet leads to a pleasant fillingness in the stomach. Hop Rod gets 2 extra Overall points for being a great bargain at $3.49 for a 22 oz bottle.
