this one reminds me of the red but pushed to the next notch....more aggressive hopping that fills the palate to the end with grapefruit bitterness. huge malty back bone of ryeness and of course more alcohol. a solid brew. i prefer the racer 5 pineness to this.

UPDATED: OCT 4, 2005 Rerate: Grapefruit, peach. STRONG! Good God! Citrus hops galore. Sweet malts. This beer pours to a large frothy creamy white head. EXCELLENT lacing. Long lasting head. Clear reddish-brown body. The flavor has grapefruit afternotes. Strong rye flavor. Honey, pepper, citrus hops. The palate is dry, medium bodied with a lively carbonation.

22 oz bomber. Deep brownish orange, nice big tan head. Assertive hoppy candi aroma. Big malty smooth flavor, with lots of American hops for flavor and bitterness. Hoppy finish. Rich yet easy drinking.

Brown color with a medium head. Very odd aroma that I was never really able to pin down... hops? Pepper? Whatever it was, more of it showed up in the flavor along with an assortment of palate torching spices, malt, and hops. Interesting to say the least.

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2005 Pours a great amber with a very creamy head. Great looking head with long lasting lacing at the top. The aroma is very distinct in terms of the rye. There is some citrus, graitfruit, hops and malts as well, and perhaps some pine. The taste is quite unique with the rye really standing out. There is pine, graitfruit, citrus and caramel present in the taste also. This is a nice beer and quite unique. I would certainly call this a Strong Ale over a Double IPA. Re-rate- Awesome on tap. Much more fresh in my opinion.

Red/amber color w/ a thin lingering head. Taste is dominated by hops, but the rye flavor is prevalent as a strong undertone. Love the flavor, nice subtle change from typical IPA taste.

Deep amber/mahogany, huge white head, lacing, potent pine, citrus, grapefruit, aroma, flavor similar, potent hops, yet some sweetness. Lots of hops. Very good.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2005 Pours very brown with deep red/amber leanings (mahogany I suppose). Nice frothy looking off white head. Looks like I want to drink it! The aroma has great hop pine and grapefruit presence. Itís straightforward and pleasing. The flavor starts with hops at the beginning (pine and grapefruit citrus) that are nice a crisp. The brew moves to some sweet malt? with a creamy tongue coating. It again moves back to hops. This time more nutshell on the finish and hints of grapefruit again. Lingers quite some time. This is good stuff. Iím a big fan of the beginning and middle of this beer, and while the end is not as enjoyable for me as the rest of the beer, it is an overall winner. Iíd like to know what flavor the Rye imparts? Iíll look forward to trying more brews from Bear Republic!

55F. Cool color. Like mahogany, but someone spilled motoroil on it, and wiped it up quick. Rusted froth, my-my-my it looks so sexy with lace dripping off all the curves of my imperial pint. Ooh, itís randy too! This runs on hop fumes, and has a sweet and spicy body. I believe this would be sensational without the heavy hop swaddling, but it is a hop rod.

Pours a deep mahogany with a decent off-white head. Heavy lacing on my boot glass. Smells awesome - subtle floral bouquet, pine, hops and a little honey. Great taste. Dry, bitter, full, complete...fantastic. The rye creeps up on you in the aftertaste. Mild alcohol hit at the back of the throat, but itís barely noticable. This is the best IPA Iíve had to date.
