3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Decent beer. The rye and hops aromas came forward but not as strong as expected. Good copper color with a medium head. The palate was average and not heavy. The carbonation was a little low but I attribute that to the age of the bottle. An above average imperial IPA with the rye spiciness thrown in. Very good, just not spectacular.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark amber color with an off white head that sticks around and laces the whole glass. Smells of sweet malted rye and hops are prevalent. Taste starts off with a bit of sweetness and it followed quickly by hops, large amount of citrus and floral flavor. Nice enjoyable beer

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: AUG 29, 2013 Fresh bottles. Dark colour. Taste of grapefruit, ryebread and some caramel. Quite bitter aftertaste, but the solid maltbase balances it-ish. Fantastic rye beer - the best out there.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a rich amber to mahogany with a rich sea foam head that lasts and clings everywhere. Nose is full of delicious citrus hops, some subdued candy malts and a slight alcoholic pepper. Taste is divine, a solid perfectly executed wall of hops slams the palate with grapefruit, zest, pineapple, and candy sweetness in the background...no over the top bitterness here

Good looking in the glass, nice head and lace. Aroma and taste seem to somewhat clash on this beer. I feel thereís a really good rye beer under there somewhere, but itís been over-hopped to the point of being forced to be in the IPA or IIPA category. Itís a bit clashing between the large hops presence and the large rye malt presence. The angst of being both a rye beer and being hopped like an IPA probably leave this beer wondering where it fits in, and yearning for balance.
Iíll pick up a four pack or a bomber of this seasonal when it comes out, but for the third year in a row, my impressions of this beer havenít changed much. Clashes between hops and rye and ABV scream out "needs balance." I kinda wish they have backed off the hops a little, and made it a plain "rye beer," to let the spicy rye flavors shine more.
Iím sure extreme hop heads and those who automatically rate anything thatís an IPA, IIPA, or RIS super-high will also rate this super high, and the ratings do seem to support that notion. I just donít think that everything thatís way over-hopped, high in ABV, or barrel-aged should automatically be given high ratings by default. IMO this is a pretty decent IPA but not spectacular. Back off a little on the hops and you might actually have a really good rye beer here.
