UPDATED: AUG 16, 2013 Bottle at Friends of Ham. Pours a murky caramel brown, finger of head. Great label, too. Aroma is floral, lychee hoppiness, with some caramel too. Taste is caramely, with nice hop bitterness (though not as much as I’d expected). Still very drinkable, though, which is dangerous at 8%. Lingering bitterness, medium body with CO2 prickle. I get the feeling that the journey over the Atlantic has done it no favours - if I’m drinking a big American IPA, I want hops, and they seemed to have deteriorated quite a bit by the time it got over to the UK. Shame - I’d expected more.

Bottle pour. Lovely dark amber color. Smell pretty weak for a DIPA, can barely pick up the hops and get no rye whatsoever. Taste makes up for this - complex and filled with rye, some hops, and sweeter malt notes after. Delightfully clean finish.

Rye blends into caramel sweetness. Piney and floral hops. Mouthful and carbonation a bit thin. Hazy brown appearance. Nice use of rye. Well balanced to sweet, bitter trail.

In Austin. Bottle to glass. Can't really get a sense of the nose as glass mostly smells of having recently been washed. Pours a hazy honey color with foam head that leaves a nice lacing. Taste of citrus, bitter hops and lots of rye. Good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The rye gives an an extra complexity to this DIPA , which has a sweet aroma, and a clean finish

Back of the bottle reads best by 05 / 28 / 15 (I think, date is really smudged). Thinking this is an IPA, I poured this into a nonic pint glass. Crap, my local store does not have any more bottles. Hopefully, I’ll see a new batch in the near future. Here’s the rest. The appearance was a nice hazy golden orange to amber color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about thirty seconds leaving some messy lacing roaming all around the glass. The smell had a nice sweet to spicy blend of rye malt to come across in a nice sweet citrus way. The taste was mainly sweet and lightly spiced through the rye, a light citrus runs through and leads to a quick sweet dry caramel to spicy aftertaste. There is a sweet citrus finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Sticky sweet malty notes run over my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good DIPA even if I did have it in the wrong glass. Hopefully, there’s a next time for this.

Draft. (How have I never rated this?) One of America’s most beautiful beers: Leaves a dense, persistent lace on the glass. Flavors are balanced between floral hops and some not-quite-sweet but slightly chewy rye character. Not as aggressive as more recent versions of the style -- the focus here is on harmony, not volume. A classic.

It’s easy to see why this is rated so highly. Even in a bottle of questionable age, the diverse flavors of rye, citrus and tangerine really come out of this. Pours maroon with good head and lacing. Thick consistency, well hidden booze. This is a beer I could come back to a lot. Everything is well tempered, and not a massive hop bomb but more than enough. Bottle.

Hazy dark orange beer with a two finger high creamy head. A lot of lacing on the glass. Nose: Citrus, grapefruit, caramel malt, syrup and orange peel. Taste: Resin, orange marmelade, pine, rye and caramel. Body: Full, smooth body with light carbonation. I love this ale!
