fredandboboflo (260), East Setauket, New York, USA Apr 14, 2008 Aroma opens up with piney hops, then turns to citrus hops. Flavor starts the same way, all oily hops, then passes to a period of sweet citrus-infused rye bread, and for me finished back on the hop notes. Full hop flavor, as opposed to full hop bitterness, very very nice.
RedSox2004 (128), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Jul 3, 2008 Cranberry brown color, decent head with very nice lacing. Citrussy hop aromas were very strong, but balanced by what I assume is the rye malt. Nice biscuity flavors complemented the bitter hops to create a well balanced flavor profile. Medium bodied with slight carbonation, dry finish, and a pleasant hops aftertaste. Great way to kick of the 4th of July weekend. daknole (480), Plantation, Florida, USA Jul 3, 2008 Wow this is a unique brew. Dark reddish brown pour wtih a nice light head. Aroma is sweet and so is the flavor. Very malty and has a nice hop and rye backbone. Very well done. I loved this, but couldnt drink more than one. Heathen (420), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jul 2, 2008 THOUGHTS: I looked at it. I smelled it. And at that point it was perfect. I knew it wouldn’t last. The flavor was nice, but not perfect. It was darker than most DIPAs. Nice change of pace. I don’t know exactly what the rye did for this beer, but it seemed to make it a better DIPA. I guess it seemed to lesson the harshness of the bitterness.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark, brownish, red-amber with a huger, rocky, off-white head that mostly lasted and left excellent lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy pine and grapefruit hops. The initial flavor was light to moderately sweet and lightly bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and moderately to heavily bitter with a long duration. There was a little caramel malt then lot of grapefruit and pine hops. The medium body was fairly dry with a soft carbonation at first then fizzy and a light to moderate astringent finish with a hint of metal. Beerman6686 (504), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 2, 2008 Poured a nice dark red to brown color with an off white head. Aroma is of rye, caramel, and hops. Flavor is a very smooth maltiness with a nice hop/rye bite. nearbeer (1043), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 1, 2008 Updated: Jul 3, 2008650 ml. Dark red-copper beer has a five-finger head that settles to a sticky half-inch. Resin, molasses, caramel, grapefruit and wood in the big aroma. Flavors of resin, earthy molasses and orange marmalade, with a finishing touch of toasted nut and dark bread. Medium body is smooth and finishes dryish.
