This beer was one of my favorites from the Holiday ale festival. The darkness of the body, the caramel color of the head, and the wonderful coffee aroma let you know that you are in for quite the treat. The taste is everything you would expect from the look and smell, and the high alcohol content is smoothed out nicely by the french oak. Bear Republic’s best work by far

At 2012 Avery Strong Ale Fest. Black with a thin light khaki head. Interesting aroma of light chocolate malts, and cinnamon French toast, with a touch of molasses. Taste is dark and chewy sweet, and a little warm. Dark chocolate, brown sugar, anise, light cinnamon, and a dark fruity essence that isn’t really pronounced, but it’s quietly there.

sample at GABF on 10/1/11. black pour with sm tan head. roast nose with oak, coffee and chocolate. medium body with more coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, and oak. sweet finish with oak notes and light vanilla.

Holiday Ale Fest... Poured dark brown, almost black, with a light brown head. Aroma of wine-like and whiskey alcohol. Sweet, cherry-like fruits with lots of booze, oak, and vanilla. Borderline cloying, but just not enough to be fully enjoyable. Yeast was nice and well balance and overall a sweet beer. Burning, alcohol heat in the finish.

Very dark brown pour with a tan head. The aroma is dense fudgy chocolate with a good amount of dark fruit cherry and plum. Not a lot of roast. Baked bread and a hint of anise. Flavor is very nice dark fruity figs, dates, cocoa with a potent dirty ashy roasted finish. Interesting beer.

On tap at the Portland Holiday Ale Festival. Colour... solid black with no head. Nose... sweet and slightly sour, a bit of Bourbon and somewhat phenolic. Palate... sweet, sort of tart, chocolate, roasty, tangy, dark brown sugar, 11.5%? Really?? Ah! There it is!! WOW (Chris Walken’s voice)!!! Got the 11.5 on the finish.

On tap at Zeitgeist in SF. Pours black with a brown head. Aromas of molasses and dark chocolate. Flavor is oodles of sweet cocoa powder mixed with chocolate syrup, a lightly roasted finish with some bitterness but not much booze.

Pitch black topped with a dirty tan swirl.
Nose is rich dark fruits, liquorice, coffee, roast malt, molasses, tar.
Taste comprises chocolate sauce, hoppy underpin, roast malt, liquorice, sticky fruit, big malt backbone.
Full bodied, oily mouthfeel, boost in the climax.
Solid enough impy if a touch sweet and boozey.

On tap. Sweet floral citrus, cherry, and caramel aroma and taste with some grainy phenolic notes and a thick sticky palate. Nice hop character but I’m not wild about this overall.
