on tap at barley’s in greenville a while back. pours a clear, reddish-gold with a thick, creamy, off-white head and a thin ring of lace. aroma is very nice with caramel malts, wood, toffee, and pine esters with notes of canned cherries and light orange citrus. flavor was very tasty as well with sweet, syrupy, fruit cocktail notes backed backed by spice pine, caramel, brandy, and grassy hops with a twist of lemon zest on the finish. palate is full bodied with medium carbonation and a long, bittersweet finish. overall, a tasty barleywine.

Tap at Barcade: hazy copper pour with a tan ring of head. Caramelly faded hop aroma. Twiggy with a crystal malt note. A touch of spearmint. Mild carbonation with a ton of crystal malt and faded minty hops. Slightly oxidized.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Nickls (1652) - SE DC, Washington DC, USA - JUN 21, 2010
(Old BA rate - tap Gingerman 09=
tap at Gingerman August 09) Thinner eggshell head that didn’t last too long, but not terrible retention; clear coppery brown color. Musty wetness on top of sweetish malts; bit of booze in the aroma. Medicinal and a bit herbal; kind of a mess here; wet woodiness; and a bit like cough syrup. Thicker and a bit sticky; bit cloying; soft carbonation. Not really good drinking; could barely finish my sample; just too may off flavors, or at least flavors that I did not enjoy. Overall, don’t know what they were going for in this one, but the mineral-like flavors on top of the booze and other stuff just missed.
