Hazy red/brown and creamy. Caramel/toffee hints of fruit (deep and darkish) Quite toasty and savoury though. Very big booziness with kicks of liquorice very rich treacly flavours. Amazing burnt sugar finish. Still. A great snifter.

Not a very good BW. Clashing sweetness and bitterness - they don’t synergize and make for a good beer. Brown with not much head. Not much in the nose. Sweetness is cloying, the bitterness, obnoxious and offensive.

Draft at Blind Tiger. Poured a hazy dark orange/brown color. The head was sticky, off white, and left some lace behind. Rich aromas of raisin, molasses, fig, and caramel. There was also a whiff of steeping malted barley. Medium to full bodied with moderate bitterness and plenty of alcohol warmth and flavor. Fairly sweet with fig and dark caramel notes. The sugars were tempered somewhat by earthy black tea and bitter citrus rind. Solid barley wine.

On tap at brewpub. Pours out a dark red-brown color, more red than your typical bw with a thick off-white head. Sweet aroma of fruit and floral hops and caramel malt. Flavor very sweet and full of brown sugar, caramel, toffee and citrus, floral and pine notes. Not the typical beer for the style, but I very much enjoyed it all the same. Very refreshing.

One of the sweetest Barley Wines I have ever had. The appearance is an attractive dark red, more red than usual for this style. The aroma was very sweet, fruity, a slight floral hoppiness. The flavor was sweet, fruity, brown sugar, toffee. The finish was a mix of swet sugar, and bittering hops. Thick, syrupy mouthfeel. Decent overall.

Location: Draft sampling from Whole Foods (Bowery @ Houston St.)

Aroma: Sweet doughy malts, some pine
Appearance: Darkish red, off-white head
Flavor: Sweet mix of fruit flavors, some grains
Palate: Full body, thick/chewy
Overall Impression: This was a pretty nice barley wine, strong and sweet, but still hoppy. Definitely worth a try.

Draught at the brewpub. Amber colored with a creamy, off-white head. Sweet honey and doughy, worty aroma with some added floral hops. Malty and grainy flavors with a distinct unfermented wort or extract flavor, some caramel, and a hoppy finish. Thick and syrupy body. I’m not sure what was up with this, but it was way to worty tasting.

Draft at BT. Pours an amber ruby body with an off white head. Fig raisins and some dark fruity esters, and finally rounding out to a dried prune flavor. Very salty and somewhat sweet, mild caramel and lightly chewy with a hint of wood and toffee. Good brew.

Tap at BT. The owner- Richard was telling me that the last time this was brewed was about 6 years ago. I had a hard time believing that since it tasted pretty damn fresh with 0 oxidation factor. Still this was a fantastic BW. Pours a hazy medium amber and a tight thin foamy lasting head. Aroma is fruity up front- lots of esters, raisin, pear, with good full sweet thick caramel toffee malts- and even a nice fresh hop spicy and fruity tone. Flavor is big upfront with tons of thick sweet doughy caramel, toffee, light molasses and thickened brown sugar- some honey as well- good fruit presence and a nice hoppy flavor and aftertaste. Overall just a great well made barleywine.

Sampled at Toronado 2009 Barleywine Festival. Pours slightly hazy orange with off white head. The aroma is all resiny with pine hops to go along with an even and sweet malt background. The taste is moderately harsh with resiny grassy pine hops from front to back. Very IIPA like. I also get some malt sweetness attempting to smooth out the hops. The hops never really give any ground.
