Draft from Toronado Barley Wine Festival. Listed as a blend of the 1999 and 2007. Rich hoppy aroma, similar to the Racer 5. Heavier bodied, somewhat sweeter, alcohol hidden well.

Draft. Amber beer with a thin off-white head. Rich spicey, malty flavor with lots of caramelization. Caramel malt aroma with some earthiness. Hops present and backing, but don’t stand out. This just didn’t do it for me and I’m surprised to see so many high rankings. It’s just a lof of malty sweetness balanced with hops - there’s not a lot of complexity here and it gets tiring.

I had this delectable treat at the BR brewpub on 2/18/06 and then again at Toronado BW-fest on 2/19/06. Poured an opaque ruby color with a thin diminishing head. Malty aroma with a smooth complex flavor. Notes of fruit, malts and some hops. One of the better barley wines I got to sample this weekend.

this is a perfect looking beer as far as im concerned.murky red body with a lovely looking head.as the head sat it left a thick wall of lacing.a little light on the aroma but the flavor was a mix of chocolate, malts, and cherries.very nice stuff indeed.

Tap @ Toronado Barleywine Festival in San Francisco. 2005 Vintage. Sweet, a little bit of apricot or peach. Lots of pine flavor but not a great balance with the rest of the flavors.

Bottle into pint glass, courtesy of Dr. Bill at the Real Ale Festival, 2005. 1999 vintage. Smells malty, with brown sugar, musty raisin, a bit of orange rind and spruce (a very little bit, but noticable). Cloudy orange in the glass. Full bodied and smooth, this was incredibly balanced. Prune and raisins up front with a good level of sweetness that stays understated but complements the malty fruit well and helps balance the chewy dry hops prick with woody tannins in the finish. There was great brown sugar infused acidity on the swallow, like a blossom of flavor to provide a direct and immediate contrast to the dry bitter finish. Great beer; so great, in fact, that I don’t feel silly using the phrase "blossom of flavor." Yeah. That good.

Not a very complex beer. Very sweet and pale malt forward. No notice of roasted malts. Some biscuity and white fruit notes. Citric acid and big hop resin with soft bitterness, Hops seem to be concentrated in the fermenter or hopback. Sweetness is forward at the finish with only mild bittering.
