Not a very good BW. Clashing sweetness and bitterness - they don’t synergize and make for a good beer. Brown with not much head. Not much in the nose. Sweetness is cloying, the bitterness, obnoxious and offensive.

Pours a burnt orange color. aroma of grapes, toffee, and caramel. Big caramel, bitter pine, and brown sugar in the flavor. Finishes with grapefruit and char. I had hopes for this, but it suffers from a complete lack of finesse, though no one thing was really bad about it.

On tap. Poured an amber color with a moderate beige head that receded to a ring. Aroma of caramel malt, some light fruitiness, and earthy hops. Flavor consists of pleasant caramel malts, with some nice spicy fruitiness (apple mainly) and a moderate, earthy hop finish what was slightly bitter. No real alcohol detectable. Full on the palate, nice moderately bitter finish. Pretty solid, good beer.

Aromas of pineapple, caramel, black pepper. Bright amber with lasting khaki head. a little flat and light in the mouth. Very grapefruit flavor, bordering on harsh, a little malt behind it, alcohol. bitter finish.

Aroma of molasses funk, amber malts and maple syrup. Appears a dark crimson/amber with a thin foam rim. Taste is syrupy amber malts, cinnamon, toffee, biscuit malts, and some hop presence. Finish is very boozey. Overall, this is very balanced and complex. I’d give this an A rating.

Tap in flight @ RnH w Andy and Dubra. Pours light caramel color with very little head. Light-bodied barleywine with subtle notes of fruit and booze. Not bold at all, fits very well within the style.

Pours deep red with a nice white head and excellent lacing. Very sweet, candy like aroma balancing a healthy dose of hops. Body is syrupy, taste is sweet balancing bitter with grapefruit, candy apple and apricot. finish is just as complex as the taste and lasts a pleasant while. Nice beer.

Pour hazy amber beige head. Aroma SWEET, brown sugar, slight floral hops, boozy, mild dark fruit. Taste cleaning materials, spicy, grapefruit, lemon floral and pine hops, orange rind, touch boozy, caramel. MF full thick chewy body mild carb. Overall not to balanced and relatively awkward not the best.

Bottle into pint glass, courtesy of Dr. Bill at the Real Ale Festival, 2005. 1999 vintage. Smells malty, with brown sugar, musty raisin, a bit of orange rind and spruce (a very little bit, but noticable). Cloudy orange in the glass. Full bodied and smooth, this was incredibly balanced. Prune and raisins up front with a good level of sweetness that stays understated but complements the malty fruit well and helps balance the chewy dry hops prick with woody tannins in the finish. There was great brown sugar infused acidity on the swallow, like a blossom of flavor to provide a direct and immediate contrast to the dry bitter finish. Great beer; so great, in fact, that I don’t feel silly using the phrase "blossom of flavor." Yeah. That good.

Draught. Pours a cloudy amber with a white head. Smells of citrus and prunes with plenty of hops. Tastes a heavy sweetness with a medium bitter and floral notes with a creamy texture and a bitter finish.
