3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep browns yet clear at the same time – like espresso wood. Bubbly khaki head fades into a broken film with a thick collar. Swirls with some lacey spots.
Dark fruits and tart chocolates. Tobacco leaf along the edges. Pumpernickel and fruitcake. Black licorice root. Burnt pecan praline. Prunes and raisins.
Dryer than the nose implied but still flavorful and robust. Toasted nuts and pumpernickel toast. More bitter nuts in the back. Dried raisins and black licorice root in the middle. Charcoal and burnt chocolates in the back.
A traditional brown ale with an American twist – a fitting tribute to the veritable Pete(r) Brown whose books site proudly on my shelf. Once again, Bear Republic does not disappoint. I’m not sure if they will brew this beer again, but I certainly hope they do.

Tap at Stagshead. I feel like I haven’t had brown ale in ages I’ll have to look that up. Pours, you guessed it, brown. Nice nose of toffee and malt. Tastes of roasted malt, toffee, nuts, quite bready, and wood. Creamy and pleasant

Bottle. Moderate light bread, roasted and nutty for the malt, light to moderate herbs for the hops, light dough for the yeast with cocoa powder in the background. head is small, fizzy, light beige with fiar lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is dark mahogany. Flavor starts lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes slightly sweet and lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, slick with a carbonation between soft and lively. This is one of the best Brown Ales I’ve eve had.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. This is an extremely dark red-brown beer. It has red currant and rich deep red fruit flavours, slight roasted notes and marzipan and orange marmalade on the finish. This is a cross between an brown ale and a Barley Wine. Superb!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pour on tap at the Local Peasant, dark brownish red pour with white head, aroma brought notes of some grain, chocolate, nice slight grass, into a touch of caramel, toffee, burnt sugars, some nutty notes as well. Taste is a mix of dark red fruits, some caramel, toffee, slight nuts, cocoa powder, finishing slightly bitter, dry. Pretty tasty.
