el_caballo (101), Beverly Hills, California, USA May 3, 2008 Pours a dark soda color with an airy tan head...some chocolate notes here with some signature bear republic hops...the mouth feel is very smooth...found the body a little thin...the hop notes are the real highlight of this beer for me as it differentiates it from the newcastles of the world, but there just is not enough of them...not a bad beer but falls a bit short for me
csbosox (971), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Sep 2, 2008 Bomber. Aroma is milk and dark chocolate, caramel, dark fruits, and some floral notes. Smells pretty darn good. Dark brown with a smallish, but dense, off white head. The taste is dark caramel, dark chocolate, malty and sweet with a nice little dark fruit thing going on. Full mouthfeel, but a clean and balanced finish. This is a mighty fine American brown and one of the best examples of the style. This is a brown ale that I would buy again and I am not a huge fan of the style, typically. ansermadide (196), Kyle, Texas, USA Aug 31, 2008 (Shared bomber with weeAnaP on August 31, 2008) INSANE HEAD! Frothing… even the lacing. Deep mohogany color with an amber glare at the bottom edge of the glass. A spicy brown ale aroma, then a slight sour brown ale flavor with a slight astringent (possibly orange peel) bite. Very aerated body. Nothing spectacular... oily. Huh. thegreenrooster (1492), St.louis, Missouri, USA Aug 29, 2008 Pour is a brown with a tan head. Aroma is of sweet malts and a nice molasses and caramel combo. Flavor has a touch of chocolate with some more molasses and brown sugar. Bear Republic does make a tasty brew and pretty cheap at only $4 for a bomber. This is a great example of how a brown ale should taste. ChainGangGuy (1536), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Aug 28, 2008 Appearance: Pours an appropriately dark brown body with a thin, beige-colored head.
Smell: Predominately malty nose smelling of oven-roasted nuts, chocolate, black tea leaves, burnt sugar and with a distinct note of rum raisin.
Taste: Toasty, chocolaty maltiness with a middling sweetness throughout. Slight tastes of toffee, cola, and earthy molasses. Sweetish, raisin-flavored fruitiness. Roasted nut husks. Floral hops combines with the roasty qualities and a tannic tea-like quality to counteract the sweetness. Drying finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Slight creaminess to the mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Well balanced between malts and bitterness, reasonably flavorful, sensible ABV... An ’a little bit of everything’ kinda brown ale. sneagrams3 (1402), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Aug 28, 2008 The Dan Journal #232. Tasted 8/26/08. 22oz bomber. Clear with a reddish brown hue. Ring of off-white head. Malty aromas with notes of caramel and cocoa and a touch toffee. Medium bodied with mild acidity. Subtle coffee flaovrs and an odd bitter, perfumy yeast character. Caramel and toasty. Solid malty brown ale!
