3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
This is a very good IPA, but given all the excellent American IPAs/APAs on the market, I thought it above average in its style, but not a truly elite beer. I think that Great Divide Titan IPA and Bell’s Two Hearted are both significantly better as far as "big," hoppy US IPAs go.
I had this beer on-tap at Roman’s in Milwaukee.
It poured a copper/amber color with a fairly abundant head with good staying power (and left nice lacing). Aroma is Cascade/citus hop goodness, but is not overpowering (BTW - I like overpowering Cascade/citrus-ness). Taste is more of the same; assertively citrus-y, but not really powerful flavor. Mouthfeel is good, but not overly sticky. I liked this beer, but with so many wonderful choices in this category, I have a hard time putting it at the top of the stack.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This was one of many great bottled beers given to me by a friend in San Diego. I kept this one out of a tasting I held with my Flying Saucer amigos. This was one brewery that stood out in the ’05 GABF. They brew solid beers and this was no exception. It is hazy orangeish amber in color with a good head. Good lacing.... It has a deep woody, hop aroma and you can tell it has backbone. The flavor is fruity- more citrus with caramel sweetness and then an intense grapefruit hop dryness that lingers awhile. A very solid IPA.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Picked this bottle up in Spokane.
Pours a bright golden orange color, with a rocky two finger head, that settles very slowly to a thick, quarter inch head, leaving behind a very thick sheet of lace.
Smell; lots of pine and citric hops, as you would expect, with a soid backbone of caramel malts. There’s also a bit of a herbal/grassy aroma. The more i smell this the better it gets.
Taste; as expected the hops are the main part of the flavor profile, with a bit of pine, grapefruit, oranges and those grassy notes. The caramel malts have enough of a presence to offset the hop bitterness a little, with a touch of a biscuits. mouthfeel is medium bodied, and very smooth, with just a great drinkability.
I can’t believe I ddn’t pick up more of this beer. This has to be my favorite IPA that I’ve had so far.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 oz bottle (2916FF) from bitbucket. Thanks again Bob! --
Bear Republic Racer 5 looks very much like the XP Pale Ale: Clear golden orange color with lively carbonation. It has a large, foamy, ivory-colored head that has good retention and zigzag lacing effects. A fresh grapefruit/sweet clementine hop aroma bursts from the glass. The base of this beer is a little more substaintial with some caramelized maltiness. The bitterness is moderate and not over the top. The great citrus and pine flavors of the hops are showcased nicely. The finish is slightly sweet and is a blend of malt, weak alcohol, pine and resin. The bitterness become slightly more agressive through the finish, but still well constrained (meaning it’s there, but it is well blended with the other flavors and doesn’t overwhelm). Overall the flavor is quite well balanced and the 7% alcohol isn’t really noticeable (what little does come out in the finish actually enhances the overall flavor and experience). This beer has a medium body and is also smooth on the palate. It also feels almost creamy in the mouth as well. Either way, this beer is going down faster than the Bear Republic XP Pale Ale! Overall I guess that this is very much like the XP Pale Ale, but more intense... I am quite impressed with the Bear Republic brews so far, but I lament that I can’t buy any of them in Ohio! This is eXePtionally good beer for the low price (less than $4 a bomber)!

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: MAR 18, 2012 22 oz bottle conditioned bomber purchased from Holiday Wine Celler in Escondido, CA back in Oct. ’06. Mostly cold storage since. I figured it was time to go ahead and drink this puppy.
Poured clear copper with thin off white to tan head. I noticed some sediment floating around in the beer left in the bottle. Goodies for the next pour. The aroma is on the light side with sweet maltiness but mostly smoothened out citrus and pine hops. I also smell a bit of yeast spiciness. The taste starts off with solid pine hop flavor that blends into pine hop bitterness. Then midway the flavor is a mix of orange peel and sweet caramel malts to create a really nice flavor note. The taste wraps up in an increasing level of complexity with sweet and bitter pine hoppiness and pale to caramel maltiness. Smooth finish. Nice IPA that I soaked up like a sponge.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a deep honeyish orange with a fluffy white head that leaves a nice lacing. There’s also some visible floaties. The aroma is beautiful. Thick and chewy in every direction. Huge resins of flowery hops, minty suggestions, candyish malts and rye bread. The flavor is just as amazing as the aroma. Huge hops (I picked up on what I though was Amarillo), minty flavors, tangerine, zesty spicyness, hint of peppery alcohol, blood oranges, piney with a solid chewy rype bread background. The finish is long, grapefruit-like and bitter. This is a top IPA, with great complex qualities. Bear Republic always has an amazing malt depth to their beers.

Great bif hopy flavor and aroma. The combo of columbus and cascade hops really take this one to another level.
