Wow! Why is it I live in New Hampshire when the best IPAs on the planet are made in California? Thanks heavens for great distributors. Racer 5 is that rare find. Hoppy, floral, and aromatic, this beer simply tastes better than it looks.

Pours a light golden amber color with a small disappearing head. Aromas of citrus hops, sweet malts, and a hint of fruit. Flavors of grapefruit, orange, with subtle hints of caramel.

Peachy golden, with a faint but fluffy head. It sported a massive amount of chunks, pretty odd for this style. I don’t think the bottle was very old, I got it only a few months ago.
Fresh hop aromas that burst of strawberries then the alcohol creeps in slowly to release notes of pine trees.
Relatively mellow carbonation, the malt tastes like cookies with a bit of cooked vegetables. The hops show up nice and easy, and slowly grow momentum, without ever going into excess. Almost no alcohol to be found in the taste, somewhat ashy finish, perhaps from the yeast shot. Not my favorite Bear Republic, but a nice sessionable IPA.

[big bottle from BevMo in SD] Hazy copper with yellowy, lacy foam. Strong hops aroma that is a bitter grapefruit with pine. This is one of those overhopped IPAs that has its nice malt character masked by a salty and sour US hops schedule, which attacks the back of your tongue and leaves you wondering if you’ll ever stop burping piney grapefruit. The bitterness from this medium bodied brew lingers for a while. Medium carbonation. Majorly overrated.

lovely citrus grapefruit hop aroma. Pours a nice cloudy orange with a thin white head. Hops, hops, hops. Eye watering hop finish - but do we really drink these beers for balance? Hop finish tapers off with some sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden. Those lucky pricks in California get to drink this all the time.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2005 Orange citrus and biscuity malts in the pleasant if unexciting aroma. Hazy, tan-copper coloured body with a low, fine bubbled, tan head that lasts and laces very well. Orange citrus hop flavour with strong bitterness that counterpoints the toasty malt base. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Bottle (Liquor Mart, Sep-05) sampled at the hotel room tasting while packing to return from GABF with Olivier_MTL and Rastacouere. Resampled at the Montreal YEHa 2005 with largely the same results (7-3-5-2-10=2.7).

UPDATED: MAY 4, 2006 Sugar and hop dominate the nose. Tons of grapefruit and chewy sugary sweetness. Orange with a tinge. Snowy, fizzy white head. Very bitter, but the the malt backbone is standing right there ready to put a boot heal in your forehead if the hops ever let down their guard. Fuller bodied. Man, this is a top notch IPA.

Thanx to Jason @ Knightly for sharing from his private stash.Big hop nose and when poured is hazy and amber.Lots of hop flavor that was quite enjoyable.I am not a hop head but really liked this one.The hops had a hugh presence but did not overtake the brew.
