Pours golden with a creamy white head. Aroma is very hoppy, with some grassy notes. Taste is sweet and with some hoppy bitterness. Medium long sweet/bitter aftertaste.

Well-done IPA with a prominent sweet malt character in the nose and taste. Sticky, pleasant mouthfeel and pretty fire-colored pour. Sweetness is offset by a strong hoppy finish, with alcohol and bitterness coming through. Perhaps a bit sweeter than I’d like in an IPA, but it’s fearless with its flavoring and that bold character makes it a solid brew.

Pours a deep golden yellow, excellent white head with good lingering. Floral, citrus hop aroma, with emphasis on the floral tones for once, and not the citrus. Hoppy nose dissolves into a pleasant malty sweetness. This sweetness carries through most of the finish, capped by a muted bitterness. The floral aspect of the hops fuses with the alcohol flavors to create an astringency that nicely offsets the sweet character. Full mouthfeel with a greater tinge of syrup-like aspect than I normally expect in an IPA, probably due to the "sweet" malt formulation of this beer. Excellent IPA, this flavor formulation would probably be excellent as a DIPA as well.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2009 A very well balanced IPA. Great aromatics with a surprising amount of malt character. Lots of excellent hops flavor but not as much bitterness as I expected. A very finely crafted and flavorful beer with a pleasant, highly calculated hops character.

4/6/05: Bottle.
Amber colored body with some lace. XL-aroma, which includes fir trees, citrus and loads of hops. Hoppy to taste, mainly fir tree and citrus. Lighter (slightly watered down) and less fresh than I expected (after such a large nose), but still a good beer. Bitter finish.

A hazy orange beer with a beige head. The aroma is sweet hoppy combined with notes of caramel. The flavor is sweet with primary notes of grass, hops, and acid from the hops, while the mouthfeel is sticky.

Bottle. Dusty golden colour with a small white head. Hoppy pine aroma and a hoppy bitter light dry taste. Medium body and a light sweet long bitter dry finish.

Wow! Now this is an IPA! Racer 5 is one of those brews that I have a hard time passing up. It’s a great beer at a great value ($4.00 a bomber here in CO). This beer has enough hops to keep hop-heads like myself happy, but also has a good sweet malt flavor to keep things balanced. I will always be a big fan of Bear Republic.

Wonderfully citric aroma of orange and grapefruit promises much and the sweet malt base supports the hefty dose of bitter hops which predominate the dry bitter finish. Very, very, very, refreshing.

On tap, Map Room Chicago. Crisp hop aroma up front is deceptive. Very dry, but understated at first, but then the hops blow up at the end as mind-numbing bitterness. Nice orange-brown coloring and mouthfeel. Put me down for more.
