3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Had this at Capital Ale House in Richmond, VA on 6-7-03. Draft version. Nice ruby brown body. Pleasant nose on this one with hops and a piney, oily hint. Bitter, hoppy taste similar to a weaker Bigfoot which I also had on draft this evening. Perfectly smooth semi-bitter finish. Good beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A golden amber with a medium white head. A mix of pine, cascade hops, and alcohol aroma. It starts out with a pine taste that lessens as it warms to be balanced by citrus to give a serious bite. Chewy feeling. Bitterness is the finish but it is refreshing and mouthwatering.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Fresh cascade hoppy aroma wafts above the clear copper body covered with a thin head. Body is robust and thick with a filling feeling. Decently balanced, but too similar to most other west coast IPAs. Still a good beer though.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
I didn't find this IPA as nice as the Alesmith but still an excellent brew. Deep copper color with ample froth which lightly laced the glass. Nose is hoppy with pine really standing out. A gentle bitterness which is nice and the way I personally like IPA's to be. Good to the finish with consistent flavor throughout.

a nice strong IPA, with good flavor, nice coloring, a good IPA but definitely not the best

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Copper color with a rocky white head that lasted all the way down the glass...tones of lace left on the glass. The aroma was hoppy for sure...citrus and floral tones prevailed. The flavor was similar to the aroma...not really sweet, but floral characters. Not much alcohol in the flavor, but my belly was nice and warm afterwards. Nice IPA.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Amber color with a rich hoppy nose. Run-of-the mill hoppy beer...nothing special. As erway states, I dont know how this is a Gold medal winner.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JAN 22, 2006 Lite amber with a rocky head. Floral hop nose and a good assertive hop flavor. GABF gold medal winner? Not really sure how that happened.
re-rate 1/22/06- Pours med. amber, slightly cloudy with a very long-lasting head. Aroma is very light floral with some grapefruit and pine but less than I expect when they start mentioning Columbus. The body is med with a pretty high level of CO2. The flavors are very floral and only slightly citrusy. The maltiness is fairly heavy and pleasant but I would like a lot more hops. The bitterness is minimal and certainly not very drying, but then again, I’m a homebrewer and the IPAs that I put on tap, well... let’s just say they aren’t lacking in hops.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hazzy amber color. Not too much visible carbonation. Mostly diminishing head, uber-hoppy aroma. Citrus and floral hop aroma along with flavor as well. Very tasty west coast IPA.

Another big surprise from Bear Republic as i was hopped out to hell and back from this one...i love how they present the image of it being sweeter than their IPA..because it is there, but damned if it doesnt take a laboratory to find that out..or a really good tongue. This one poured a fiery orange with this lovely micro white ring of head that clung to the sides of the liquid. The aroma was totally hops...grass, and earthy tones...with you guessed it, more hops!!! The flavor begins very citrusy and grassy but damned if there isnt a wonderful caramel maltness right in the mid-sip that descends down the tongue and the back of the throat to make a beautiful sweet contrast to the beer. This one definitely has a nice carbonation level..very mild to medium, wonderful spruce like hops...earthy and nice with contrasting sweetness..a very nice beer from Bear Republic...i havent been disappointed with them yet.
