williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Jul 19, 2009 Bitter and flowery in both the aroma and the taste. Lots of orange peel and grapefruit hops, with some sweet perfume in both as well. Pine on the back of the tongue. A hazy honey-orange appearance, and an unparalleled amount of lace. A prickly bite on the swallow. A really excellent beer, and priced relatively reasonably. humulushound (109), British Columbia, Canada Jul 19, 2009 Pours from 650mL bottle into shaker light amber will perfect foamy cap. Nose of orange blossoms, citrus fruits, sweet malt, pine. Flavor of grapefruit in the forefront, light malt in the midpalate,a little pine and burnt caramel in the backbone with a bitter finish. Warming, delightful, effervescent and smooth with oodles of fine lacing. I would say what separates this from Stone’s IPA is richness and balance. tyanow (10), California, USA Jul 18, 2009 I am addicted to Racer 5. I recently called Bear Republic to arrange for some kegs and I told the lady who works there about my addiction. She replied, "I hear that a lot".
Lighter than expected orangish yellow with a nice puff head that lingers and laces.
Overwhelming (in a good way) citrus hop aroma. Distinctly grapefruit and a slight pine note.
The taste is a lot more hop than malt but both are very apparent. The word that always comes to mind is fresh. It is crisper than you’d imagine a 7% beer to be.
This is a bold beer but remarkably drinkable. sethdude (600), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jul 17, 2009 Pours orange with a huge billowy head and lots of flocculation. Massive lacing. Aroma is sharp pine notes with a faint caramel backbone. Flavor is PNW hop fruitiness, somewhat balanced by easy caramel and pale hops below. Not terribly complicated or complex, but well-crafted and fairly drinkable. arminjewell (100), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 17, 2009 Bear Republic makes em hoppy! Poured orange/yellow with white head with little lacing. Aroma of grapefruit and pine, more emphasizing the citrus. Smooth on the palate, and full of upfront hop flavor leaving a wonderful bitter aftertaste. Great IPA. Barrios (852), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jul 14, 2009 Pours a golden-amber body with off-white legs. Smells of malt, citrus, fresh hops and pine. Flavor is malt, fresh hops, pine, and some citrus. Finish has a nice bitterness. savnac (394), Palmer, Alaska, USA Jul 14, 2009 On tap. Slightly cloudy amber/orange with a tiny white head. Very fruity aroma of pineapple, lemon and even a floral scent. Sweet with a smooth bitter finish. Medium body with a syrupy mouth feel and a slightly dry finish. You really get a fresh dry hop flavor in this one. This is a fantastic beer, one of the best IPA’s I’ve ever had. DeadGirl (192), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Jul 13, 2009 On tap at Rattle ’N’ Hum (NYC): Nose is all hops. Truly refreshing. This is the perfect beer after a long workday. Citrus (a little orange, more grapefruit), bitter, and grassy notes... definitely has that bold, earthly flavor throughout.
