Commercial Description:
This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer’s statement on this style. 2004 L.A. Commercial Brewing Competition, Silver Medal Winner; 2004 World Beer Cup, Silver Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, San Diego, Gold Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, Chicago, Gold Medal Winner; 1999 Great Amercian Beer Festival, Gold Medal Winner - og 1.070, ABV 7.0%, IBU 69. THis is one hell of a full bodied, piney, citrus bomb. THe IBU is perfect, because it is on the precipice of being overwhelming, but just right to give you a good kick in the bollocks. Just shaded by Green Flash as my favourite American IPA. Bear Republic has to be one of the most steadfastly reliable brewers around. Cheers!

Pours amber into the glass with a white head. Aroma is citrus hops and clean malt. Flavor is a nice caramel malt to balance the grapefruit hop flavor. Really nice IPA

Tap at Barney’s Beanery in Santa Monica. Re-rate from a tap at Pap, which was taken better care of. Very full DIPA that seems very like X with less dry-hopping. Still those sweeter hops - apple, honey, flowers, but none of the balance of sharper or dry hopped hops. Malt is invisible.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber, nice tan head. Aroma is subdued sweet hops, touch of caramel and notes of grapfruit / pine. Flavor is more of the same, all subdued. Bitter finish that lingers.

22oz bottle. Pours a clear orange-gold color with a thin, 1 finger white head. Very floral, hoppy aroma with citrus notes. Citrus hop flavor overwhelmed the tongue with a not overly bitter finish. A solid IPA.

Draft @ the brewpub. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. Has a malty hoppy pine needles aroma with some hints of citrus. Sweetish malty bitter hoppy piney citrus grassy flavor. Has a malty bitter hoppy piney finish with a long bitter aftertaste.

Pours a clear golden-orange color with a head greater than one inch which is very frothy and white. Aroma is very strong of bitter Columbus hops and very light notes of citrus but barely detectable. The beer has a very smooth flavor containing a great citrus and grass hops flavor which meshes well with the light sweet malty flavor. The beer leaves an awesome lacing on the glass and has great carbonation which really brings the aroma to the nose. After the flavor has been lingering in your mouth after a sip, it starts to taste a bit salty. Overall a fantastic IPA for the price and a very well balanced beer.
