Tasted from bottle. Pours a hazy orange with white head. Aroma is citrus dominated. Grapefruit, pineapple, orange peel. Taste is citrus hops excellently balanced with a biscuity malt backbone. Has some spices on the taste too which adds to the flavor. Caramel malt, citrus and tropical fruit. Medium bodied. Very well done IPA. Definitely top tier. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

October 2nd, 2012 - Bear Republic’s Racer 5 is ALL over the place. I’m sure I’ve seen it in Colorado, but in San Diego it is a staple from every corner liquor store all the way to the mega-booze emporiums. So, it wasn’t hard to find an occasion where a six-pack of the brew would do for a board game night on short notice. The aroma is hoppy and sweet, with heavy grapefruit notes, a touch of light jasmine, a squeeze of orange, and even an weaker squeeze of lemon, too. The flavor exhibits a lovely balance, squaring nice, resiny hops against the deep sweetness of blood orange, and some of the acidic and semi-sweet bitterness of ruby grapefruits. Combined with it’s omnipresent availability, this stands up to being a great beer for grabbing on the way to a party. Beer sophomores to beer snobs will thank you for the charity.

To be fair, there are a lot of West Coast IPA’s that deserve some love. Racer 5 is one of the greats, though. The balance is what makes this brew. The biscuit-like flavors of crystal malt are trumped only slightly by the piney, oily, citrusy, floral hop smells and tastes. Unlike some California hop bombs, Racer 5 provides a lot of herbal hoppiness without the stinging bite. It’s a powerful, tasty brew that doesn’t punish you. Even in a world with IPA’s that have become increasingly potent, Bear Republic offers an ale that still has a well-deserved place of honor.

Gold, good carbonation, excellent lacing and head retention. Subtle and fresh aroma from the hops, citric, sweet, malty. Very smooth in taste, sweet, malt, subtle honey, medium bitterness and dry finish. an excellent, easygoing IPA.

UPDATED: JUN 18, 2014 Light orange color with a three finger white head. Aroma is citrus, pine, hops and a hint of malt. Taste is pine and citrus. Bitter I’m the beginning with a balance finish. In the end, you will not taste the bitterness. A great IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A nice hoppy brew. Recently re-sampled this at a local barbeque place. A great summer time ale with a refreshing and somewhat pungent flavor. Decent head retention and sticky lacing. Hop oils can be seen within its clear-hazy appearance. A good solid choice for IPA lovers.

Bottle from Petaluma Market. Cloudy orange appearance with nice big fluffy white head. Lovely citrus tropical fruits aroma. Some pine. Fruity flavour with plenty of aggressive bitterness. Big, enjoyable and refreshing. Tasty stuff that belies it’s strength.

Decent beer. Danky aroma and abrupt bitter finish. Old skool IPA. Some nice fruity notes in aroma and flavour.
