Commercial Description:
This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer’s statement on this style. 2004 L.A. Commercial Brewing Competition, Silver Medal Winner; 2004 World Beer Cup, Silver Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, San Diego, Gold Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, Chicago, Gold Medal Winner; 1999 Great Amercian Beer Festival, Gold Medal Winner - og 1.070, ABV 7.0%, IBU 69. Aroma is citrus, and some pine, pours hazy copper, nice carbonation and body, flavor is citrus, pine and some swwet maltiness, very balanced for an American IPA, leaves a light pine after taste, one of the better IPA’s i’ve had.

Hazy light copper. Starts out with a puffy white head that dissipates to just around the rim of the glass, but it still leaves pretty good lacing. Pine/Pine-Sol aroma with a similar taste. Tons of hops, but I didn’t detect a malty counterpart.

A very easy IPA to like. Hazy orange pour, good head, moderate lacing. Nose of hops and caramel and malts. Taste has balance, far more balance than I expect in an American IPA. Hopped about the same as a Victory Hop Devil with a tad more clarity and focus and a tad more balance; I rate the Victory higher only because I have been lucky enough to sample some amazing cask conditioned versions at the brewery near my home over the years. I do like the racer, but there are many I prefer, like Davil Dancer (no balance), Stone Ruination (some balance), Dog Fish 90 minute ... This is a very, very fine beer, just not the best in its class. // rerated 18 september 2008 ... even a little better than I remembered.

Tried this one on draft at Jack’s (Fisherman’s Wharf) while on vacation in San Francisco, CA. Slightly sweet aroma with plentiful hops. Very nice flavor of citrus and hops with a good amount of bitterness in the finish. I enjoyed this one!

Nose is toast soaked in resin honey. Light amber color, large long lasting foamy head with nice lacing. Mild malty sweetness, maybe a hint of vanilla, travels to bitterness and then soft hop aroma with a light alcohol burn. Medium body, crisp carbonation that lightens it up and makes it refreshing. Finish is smooth and crisp. One of the best balanced strong IPAs out there...really a class of its own...great beer!

1Pt, 6 oz bottle. Pours medium orange amber with a small, fine head. Smells of fragrant piney hops and follows with light caramel. Flavor is first a nice sweetness and then has a long and very bitter finish. A bit excessive.

Amber in color with a good sized, white head with decent lacing. Smells strongly of hops with a note of citrus and a hint of pine. Has a very malty flavor of hops and bitter citrus. A very bitter beer, but good nonetheless.
