Commercial Description:
This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer’s statement on this style. 2004 L.A. Commercial Brewing Competition, Silver Medal Winner; 2004 World Beer Cup, Silver Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, San Diego, Gold Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, Chicago, Gold Medal Winner; 1999 Great Amercian Beer Festival, Gold Medal Winner - og 1.070, ABV 7.0%, IBU 69. Bottle at Shenandoah Beer Throwdown, thanks argo0. Orange, hazy, small white head. Aroma is grapefruit, pine and caramel. Flavor is quite malty, and a great deal of citrusy, pine hops at end, with a slight bit of warming alcohol in aftertaste. Very tasty.

Chock full of evergreen and tart citrus, the aroma is strong and real nice. Light golden-copper body with a bubbly white head and stringy lacing. The beer has a glowing haze due to the bottle conditioning. Filling beer with a very bitter mouth feel that really awakens the taste buds. Grapefruit galore backed by resinous pine, bread, and nuts. An aggressive IPA with plenty of puckering, lip smacking goodness.

pours hazy gold, nice off-white head, with good lacing. earthy, citrus hops in the nose. citrus bitterness with some kind of floral hint. medium bodied, bitter finish. a very good effort, but i detected an almost corn syrupy hint in the taste that knocks off a point.

Had this back to back with their Hp Rod Rye and was disappointed with this one after having the former. Not much hop character in the nose and though it has a good deal of bitterness there is no hop flavor. It smells and tastes of biscuit and caramel. Smooth and drinkable but not an IPA that I will look for again.

Rerate: I had this on draft last night and it was a ton better than it was from the bottle I had. It must have been a bad bottle because this stuff was fabulous. Crisp and clean with a huge hop bite. Lots of citrus and pine. Delicious.

There is not a better balanced beer in my opinion. From the initial look (perfect orange coloring) to the bouquet, to the first taste through to the finish, every part of the beer (alcohol, hops and barley) is perfectly in balance. I’ll be drinking this one for a long time.

Draft A little too much hops for my taste, but all in all not a bad beer. Grapefruity flavors adds a nice citrus element to it. All in all, not bad. Strong Orange in color. Strong smell of hops, pine, citrus - Great aroma!

Another bottle from KegBear. Incredible aroma of hops and not much else and that is all I need. Its definitely too hoppy I never thought I would say those words but this one just seems to be over the top. Liked it a lot to try but I just don’t see myself buying this one again

Pours a clear orange with few bubbles and a small bubbly off-white froth. Big piney, grapefruit and rich caramel malty aroma. Big grapefruit flavor, sweet rich malt that overwhelms the initial salty piney hop flavor. These California IPA’s are all starting to taste the same to me... but this one has some nice balance to it and depth. A little touch of honey and some melon juiciness come out later. Great palate, medium glassy body, slight stickiness and unobtrusive gentle carbonation, the fresh hops sting the mouth a tad a la dreadnaught .
