Commercial Description:
This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer’s statement on this style. 2004 L.A. Pours deep golden with a one finger head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving a decent swirl of bubbles on top. Minimal lacing. Smell is mostly fruit hops - grapefruit, orange, and lemon zest. Mild bready malt smell balances it out a little, though it’s mostly a light fruit hop smell. Initial taste of grapefruit, lemon and general fruity hops followed by the malty sweetness. The finish actually has a bit of resiny hops but is fairly crisp for an IPA. Fairly light mouthfeel with a decent carbonation. Drinkability is actually pretty high on this and I could drink this one most of the night.

ABV: 7% RateBeer rating: 98 Calories: estimated at C Volume: 22 fl oz Glass: tulip Purchased at: West Trenton Wine and Liquor, West Trenton, NJ Price: $4.75 Consumed at: home First Impression: Aroma is quite hoppy, floral, grapefruit, olive oil, herbal, welcoming. Visuals include a fluffy white head on a surprisingly deep amber hazy body. Lacing is very nice. Taste is rich and bitter with grapefruit, with a satisfying long acrid aftertaste. Palate is crisp, dusty, and top and back of the tongue is active. Second Impression: a very well crafted beer. Interesting visually, and in aroma. Tastes very good - not the best IPA out there, but very high on the list for me. Well worth another taste. Aroma: 8 out of 10 Visuals: 4 out of 5 Taste: 9 out of 10 Palate: 5 out of 5 Overall: 18 out of 20. I liked the aroma, taste, palate, and visuals.

Bottle. Aroma foreward with citrus hops, maybe some pine/other plant life there too. Flavor is like a super twangy grapefruit/orange beer beverage concoction. Lots of hop resin, just the right amount of semi-sweet malt. For me, a perfect balance between a dry IPA and a sweet DIPA. Great stuff from a brewer that never disappoints.

Bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy orange with a foamy white head. Aroma and flavor of citrus and piney hop, some corn, sweet malt. Very drinkable, especially when cold. A little heavy mouthfeel for a single IPA, not that I minded necessarily....an awesome beer with hop deliciousness.

Update 9/14/08: Thought I’d revist this tasty IPA...Growler from Bellport Beer. Aroma of luscious pine and faint citrus. Flavor of lots of citrus (orange peel) with bitter piney hops in the finish. Quite sweet. Nicely balanced, although more on the hoppier side. Just as tasty as before! (No change in my rate)

(Sample from July 20, 2007 Beer Club Meeting; Sample from May 9, 2008 Special Beer Club Tasting) You can definitely tell this one is unfiltered. Slightly cloudy yellow/orange color with foamy white head. Smell is musky and hoppy. Taste is almost spicy, and scrumdiddlyumptiosly hoppy. Bear Republic is so good at this. So well done.

A top of the line IPA. Great aroma of pine and citrus. Great flavor of the same with a crisp hop bite.

400th rating - Chose this for the milestone given I am scheduled to bottle my first homebrew on saturday (extract brew) which was a clone of the Red Rocket from Bear Republic and thought this would be a fitting choice. Really floral IPA. Heavy hop aroma with a strong hop presence marked by a sweet grapefruit presence. Somewhat oily with light resin, but not overpowering by any means. Medium sweet caramel maltiness with a moderate roasty character.

Tap @ Bodega: pours a dark yellow. Aroma of fresh citrus. Nice body, bittersweet hop finish. Not a standout but very drinkable.
