Commercial Description:
This is a hoppy IPA. Did I say hops? Your brewer is a hop head! This is a full bodied beer using American grains. The goal was to create a base for showing off the unique floral qualities of two Pacific Northwest hops, Columbus and Cascade. Columbus is a new hybrid High Alpha Acid hop used mostly for bittering, but used heavily as an aromatic in this strong brew. Cascade is the balance that ties the malt and bittering hops together. It is a true specialty ale and is our brewer’s statement on this style. 2004 L.A. Commercial Brewing Competition, Silver Medal Winner; 2004 World Beer Cup, Silver Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, San Diego, Gold Medal Winner; 2001 Real Ale Festival, Chicago, Gold Medal Winner; 1999 Great Amercian Beer Festival, Gold Medal Winner - og 1.070, ABV 7.0%, IBU 69. On tap at Horse Brass Pub, Portland. Copper with lasting beige head. Sherberty hop aroma, great raspberry fruit and then good dose of sherberty hop. It’s outstanding. Great balance and certainly one of my favourite beers of my 2 weeks in PNW.

22 oz bottle via Capital market. Pours a hazy orange amber with an average sized beige head. Nose is mostly pine and orange. Wow this is delicious. Start with some sweetness, almost molasses sweet for just an instant, then quickly turns to orange, a little pineapple, and then an explosion of pine hoppiness. Finish is bittersweet with emphasis on the bitter. Body is medium/full and carbonation is average. This is a world class IPA that any true hop-head should fall in love with!! 6/28/2009-rerate-orig rating was 9/5/10/5/19-22 oz bottle via HAgen. Pours a semi-clear copper with an average chunky beige head. Nose is pineapple and grapefruit. Taste is ..mm..grapefruit, orange..grapefruit, pine...and did i mention grapefruit? Body is medium/full, carbonation is moderate. I would call this an IPA and a half, as it is a bit full bodies for an IPA. And i must say IPA and a halfs are about my favorite style. THey allow the hops to shine without a too syrupy body or too much alc interfering with the hoppy goodness. And this is about as perfect an example as one can get.

Piney and herbal aroma; intensely hoppy with floral and weedy overtones. Low malt aroma, low alcoholic vapor. Light copper with golden highlights. Brilliantly clear with good apparent carbonation. Slight head retention, off-white. Slightly sweet initial flavor with round malty sense that explodes into hops. Both the floral pine from the nose and side-of-tongue, mouthful of nickels bitterness. Late flavors all hop with a vaguely vaporous finish. Upper limit of alcohol for style. Hint of cherry as it warms. Very late finish has more grapefruit/citrus notes.

I gotta say, I walked past this one way to many times in my local brew store and now that I finally picked it up I can’t wait to go back...pours to a hazzzy pale orange with a average light beige head, plenty of delicious particles floating around..The taste of racer 5 is what shocked me the most, heavy hops herbs, flowers, pines, mixing plenty of grapefruit ,oranges that blends perfectly with sweet caramel malts in the backround..what a great taste for a IPA..R5 is easily in the top 5 IPA’s (fav beer) that I ever had..I’m just hoppy..

I am addicted to Racer 5. I recently called Bear Republic to arrange for some kegs and I told the lady who works there about my addiction. She replied, "I hear that a lot". Lighter than expected orangish yellow with a nice puff head that lingers and laces. Overwhelming (in a good way) citrus hop aroma. Distinctly grapefruit and a slight pine note. The taste is a lot more hop than malt but both are very apparent. The word that always comes to mind is fresh. It is crisper than you’d imagine a 7% beer to be. This is a bold beer but remarkably drinkable.

Yes! This as a very powerful beer with a head-kicking flavor. The hops are overwhelming but remain delicious. Superior beverage.

The hops blew me away. The moment I stuck my nose in the beer, it was all HOPS. Love it. Beautiful white fluffy head with great lacing. Light amber body and goes down your throat perfectly. Enjoy this great Californian IPA chilled. Our summers are better with Racer 5 IPA.
