4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap @ Hopdevil Grill. Amber color with a piney citrus aroma that awakens the senses. Flavor is a wonderful piney-citrus-sticky-sweet hop mix that really comes to the table. Not much malt here, but its in no way unbalanced for a DIPA. Impeccable mouthfeel - best new beer in the style for me in some time. Wonderfully sweet - this one went way too fast. Brilliant example of the style in my book.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 24, 2008 Draught at The Red in Santa Cruz. Clear brown. Bursting hop aroma with flowers, orange and grapefruit. The flavor is pretty sweet; a little more so than the hops can rightly dominate. Bitter and flavorful hops play with the sweetness of the malt. Pretty nice stuff, but not the target dipa for me. (3.7) Rerate: Draught at the red. Orange/amber color with a sticky head. Oily, citrus and sap aroma that screams fresh, juicy hops. The flavor has a moderate malt sweetness that is pretty pale, with some light caramel and toasted malt. The hops are very green and oily, with a strong Orange/grapefruit and light tropical flavor. Bitterness is pretty modest in balance with the malt sweetness, just enough to win out in the end. Medium-full body with tight carbonation. Nice oily and citrucy DIPA. The balance makes this pretty drinkable as well.

On tap @ Bistro 8th Annual DIPA Fest poured a clear copper with a lasting creamy ivory head. Aromas of pine, carmel and citrus. Palate was medioum bodied and smooth with a drey fin ish. Flavors of carmel, orange, grapefruit rind and light pine with a smooth lingering bitter finish.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Yes, finally get to try this on tap. Pours hazy orange-copper with a short but thick off-white head. Resin, pine, white pepper, and cake batter-like malt in the aroma. Sweet malt and candy grapefruit taste up front that rapidly progresses into a full-body hoppiness. Lots of grapefruit mixed with the sticky resin. Apricot, tangerine, and malt come through along with this towards the finish. It maintains its hoppy bittersweetness to the end without falling out of balance. Awesome beer.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at Naja’s.
Copper color with an off-white 1 finger head. Dense foam leaves good lacing.
Bitter hops in the nose with a balancing sweetness.
Taste starts out with sweet malt flavors and then undergoes a very linear metamorphosis into huge hop bomb territory. Pine and grapefruit blister the tongue, along with a hint of orange zest and pineapple similar to YuleSmith.
Smooth and dynamic enough to keep one interested. Nice rich body. Very drinkable if hop monsters are your thing.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Somebody below said it had a touch of pine. I disagree. There is more than a touch. It’s like licking the pine tree. I certainly could have used some other dimensions in the hopping, but if they were going for pine, they got it.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAY 18, 2008 Pours a deep amber color with about a 1" head. The head is dense and laces the entire glass on the way down. Not a very strong nose to this Dipa. Smells of hops, and some tangy citrus. Taste big hops up front, bitter, sweet, grassy. Sweetens on the back of the tongue and throat with some citrus flavors, grapefruit etc. Palate is thickish. The carbonation doesn’t do it for me, not enough. Drinkable for 9.0% but not my favorite DIpa.

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2012 Pizza Port Strong Ale Fest ’07. Somewhat a step up from the Racer 5 for me. Although not much activity was going on in my head at this point in the afternoon of tastings, I do remember ranting about the hops load on this one. Stanky, sticky aroma of resiny hops, and sugary malts. Plenty of balance going on here, with lots of citrus notes in the flavor. Dry finish that keeps the flavor going for a while. Good stuff right here.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2007 PP SAF: Coppery hue with small head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of pine, resin, and leafy hops, grapefruit ester, biscuity and caramel malt. The taste has a twangy acidic fruit and piney bitterness over a blanket of soft and sweet grains. The mouth feel is aggressive and biting with a warming finish. Very nicely balance and drinkable.
