4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 oz. bottle (2012 vintage) served in a Westbrook tulip. Huge thanks to mfavoino (Matt) for hitting this long time want!
A: Pours a dark amber with a yellowed head forming on the pour. It recedes to a bubbly ring that leaves some soapy, sticky lace as it goes down the glass.
S: Sticky orange citrus with some candied grapefruit. A little booze with some nice caramel malt sweetness.
T: Sticky grapefruit just like the nose with a little bit of smooth booze. Light bitter pine with some citrus zest and honey sweetness. Very clean throughout with nice residual hop oils sticking to the tongue. As the beer warms the caramel malt from the nose really comes out.
M: Medium bodied with a little stick to it. Finishes clean and surprisingly light. Medium carbonation level.
O: Nicely balanced and I really enjoyed the subtle nuances of this beer. Sweet, sticky and bitter, this beer hits all levels a hop head would want.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
1/22/15. 22oz bottle from the FWB Chan’s. Generally speaking, I feel like this could be hoppier, maybe fresher... I don’t have the bottle in my hand, but I saw it was "best by" sometime in mid-February when I poured. It was sitting out on a room temp shelf, though. Hazy orange pour with a nice off-white head, great lacing. Still a nice aroma, just a little more biscuity/crackery than I was expecting. Otherwise a nice hop aroma, pine, lots of citrus, candied orange peel - it doesn’t punch you in the face (at least this bottle), which is almost a nice change of pace from all the EXTREME hops out there these days. Nice flavor, again more malt presence than I was thinking, crackery/biscuity, lots of grapefruit and orange, some pine lingers. Alcohol is hidden well, though the mouthfeel is plenty rich and hints at it being a double. Tasty!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, 10C. BB 24/3/15. Slightly hazy amber with a fluffy cream head that lasts and laces well. Aroma of nectarines, orange, grapefruit, bread, a slightly boozy menthol note. Just getting towards sticky, lowish carbonation. Sweet with some caramel, but mainly stone fruit and bread with citrus, some tropical fruit and creeping pine. Dries out a little at the end with very firm but not harsh bitterness. Another really good one.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a solid gold with an off-white head and lots of lacing. It has a great aroma of resin, pine, and lots of malt. The flavor is strong hops up front with a malty backbone and bittersweet finish over a medium-heavy body.

On tap at City Beer. Wow on the nose, a bit rough on the tongue but all in all a top end double IPA.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Best by 2/24/15 bomber. Kind of a long time want. Racer 5 was one of the first IPAs I had, never saw X in Chicago, but I guess it’s in Dallas this time of year. Very centennial hopish. Kind of grassy floral hops. Bitter, sweet malt for an IPA. Similar to racer 5. Decent stuff.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On draft at Rattle and Hum, NYC. Clearly this beer is pushing the red line with a high IBU and fueled with a high ABV. I felt I was steered wrong as this was a bit over-hyped. To me it does not finish in the winner’s circle for the style.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a hazy deep amber color with a massive head of off-white colored foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a tons of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew hits the nose right as you open the beer. A wave of tropical fruits, heaviest of tangerine and mango, greet the nose, along with a very nice heavy showing of a grapefruit hop smell. With these aromas, so too comes other aromas of a bready and caramel smell as well as a rather decent showing of a pine and earthy smell. With a little bit of an herbal hop rounding out the aroma, a very rich and pleasant IPA smell is produced overall.
Taste – The taste begins with caramel, sweet, doughy taste mixed with a whole lot of tangerine and orange. Some grapefruit is present at the start as well, with it gaining intensity up to the middle of the taste. Once the grapefruit maximizes, other hop flavors of a resinous pine and herbal flavor start hitting the tongue. While these start out lighter, they increase to the end, with the combination of the two overpowering the grapefruit when all is said and done. The sweetness, all the while, fades a bit (but not too much) with the caramel being the most pronounced loss. In the end, a light alcohol taste and a bit of earth come to the tongue, producing a very citrus fruity and resinously hopped taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is rather thick and creamy with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. The feel is very nice for the mix of citrus and resinous flavors, bathing the tongue in all the rich and complex flavors of the brew. These flavors and light alcohol taste are even further accentuated by the lighter carbonation, with the combo of body and carbonation creating a very nice sipper.
Overall – This is one very tasty double IPA. The rich complex flavors delight the taste buds as they glide upon and then linger on the tongue. Very nice.
