3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 argo0 (9222) - Washington DC, USA - OCT 29, 2002
Clear light orange body with a medium eggshell white head. Aroma is strong pine, with apricot. Piny hops are what dominate, though there’s also some caramel maltiness to provide balance. Nice bitter aftertaste.

Great aroma that deceives you about the body. Body is a great balance of hops and malt, and quite refreshing. A great example of the style.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 uglybastard (101) - Riverside, California, USA - AUG 27, 2002
Light copper, amber in color. Big bubbly white head that leaves a nice, heavy lace on the glass. Heavy fruity, apricot, pineapple scents tantalize the nose. Then you sip. Beautiful light apple like sweetness that fades into a bitter earthyness on the end. Leaves a dry hoppy bitterness as an aftertaste. This was a great experience.

Bottle. A foamy white head and amber body. A cascade hop aroma with some citrus and floral notes. I thought this was a fairly average pale ale with a somewhat better aroma.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 BeerLimey (2135) - California, USA - AUG 3, 2002
UPDATED: MAY 31, 2011 Copper amber in color, good head formation, a few floaties.
fresh lemon, hoppy aroma rushes out relaxing and showing signs of sugary caramel and biscuity malt.
Light carbonation on palate compared to other west coast pales. Good hop presence throughout, nice and citric in the finish. Dry biscuity flavor and caramel malts. Very English in style but add a little carbonation and west coast hops. XP talks about a west coast style of pale ale to me but the label explains that the X stands for Exceptional not Extra. Couldn’t agree more.

The first Bear Ale I’m not crazy about...which basically means that it is merely a very well crafted example of an aggressively hopped APA. Good malts, mainly tingly tangy in the finish, yet still surprisingly a bit thin, great mix of hop resin and malt in the nose, beautiful in the glass. Huge frothy head. A really good beer.
