COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A wheat wine, Ashnan displays great depth of character and complexity. It features bold tannic notes that integrate very well with the tropical fruit flavours. Aging in white wine barrels contributes wood and wine character to the noticeable alcohol presence, and enhances a dry finish. A beer with a wine-imposed identity crisis, Ashnan sits comfortably between, offering the best qualities of both. History & Style Beau’s LCBO Barrel Aged Beer Feature for spring 2014 is inspired by the art and mythology of ancient Mesopotamia. Ashnan was the Mesopotamian goddess of grain, an apt symbol for this barrel aged wheat wine. This rare and relatively new beer style is similar in strength to a barley wine, but with a higher ratio of wheat to barley for a more subtle, less malty flavour. Tasting Notes Ashnan wheat wine pours a light gold colour, and is moderately hopped. This lively, effervescent golden ale abounds in tropical fruit flavours, notably pineapple. The wine-like character is pronounced, with buttery chardonnay aromas giving way to oakiness. The finish is gently warming. Food Pairings Grilled halibut, piri piri chicken, raw oysters, grilled vegetable/chevre wraps Technical Specs ALC./VOL.: 9.8% INGREDIENTS: Local Spring Water, Organic Barley & Wheat Malts, Organic Hops, Brewer’s Yeast.

600 ml bottle. Pours a clear orangeish pale golden with a thin white head. Aroma is apricots, mangoes, tart, vanilla, wood. Flavor is lemon, orange, apricot, mango, guava, white wine. Finish is grapefruit, lemon, superb tartness, white wine, some hoppy notes. Lingering wood, vanilla, tropical fruit, and a bit of a carbonated blitz at the end. Full body, soft mouthfeel, medium to somewhat strong carbonation. A great surprise!

(Rating #5984)

Bomber. Pale copper with an of white head that fades to a thin ring around the glass. Too cold at cellar temperature and somewhat offensive with acetone notes which don’t completely fade. White raisins, fermented on (bad experience in university), peach skin, macintosh apple. Moderate body and carbonation, slightly sweet with an alcohol burn, some unripe papaya and grape finish with some oak.

600 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a clearish golden colour with small white head. Aroma is quite vinous with some fruity sweetness, wood, spice and some yeasty esters. Flavour is also big on white wine character, lots of oak, fair amount of peppery spice and a little sweet fruitiness. Bit of burn in the finish. Interesting beer.

Slightly hazy dark gold under a bubbly, pristine white, dotty sheet. Complex vinous flavour with not just white grape, but that combined with butterscotch oak and woody hops bitterness. Sweet and bitter in good balance.

Copper pour, no head. Aroma is earthy barn, apple, bready Flavour is wheat and crisp fruit on the front of the palate. Turns bad with a musty mildew and wooly weird finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Batch 3074 packaged 2014/02/13. Pours a clean golden-amber colour with a small creamy-foam white head, disappearing quickly enough, but leaving creamy lace. Winy aromas with some sweet grapes, yeast and nutty notes. The taste has the same grapes-raisins combination, so sweet enough, but the malt finishes with a smokiness to it. Nice and bready overall with the fruits coming from the Chardonnay barrels and hints of sourness. Full bodied and smooth, with the alcohol well-hidden. A good wheat wine with the added touch of the wine barrel.
