COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A wheat wine, Ashnan displays great depth of character and complexity. It features bold tannic notes that integrate very well with the tropical fruit flavours. Aging in white wine barrels contributes wood and wine character to the noticeable alcohol presence, and enhances a dry finish. A beer with a wine-imposed identity crisis, Ashnan sits comfortably between, offering the best qualities of both. History & Style Beau’s LCBO Barrel Aged Beer Feature for spring 2014 is inspired by the art and mythology of ancient Mesopotamia. Ashnan was the Mesopotamian goddess of grain, an apt symbol for this barrel aged wheat wine. This rare and relatively new beer style is similar in strength to a barley wine, but with a higher ratio of wheat to barley for a more subtle, less malty flavour. Tasting Notes Ashnan wheat wine pours a light gold colour, and is moderately hopped. This lively, effervescent golden ale abounds in tropical fruit flavours, notably pineapple. The wine-like character is pronounced, with buttery chardonnay aromas giving way to oakiness. The finish is gently warming. Food Pairings Grilled halibut, piri piri chicken, raw oysters, grilled vegetable/chevre wraps Technical Specs ALC./VOL.: 9.8% INGREDIENTS: Local Spring Water, Organic Barley & Wheat Malts, Organic Hops, Brewer’s Yeast. Bottle, shared with Robbie. Medium golden, low white head. Pale malts deliver a sticky-sweet barley-candy body, but there is a lovely vinous character here that provides an almost tart/sour quality, some oaky undertones as well. Interesting, and not as cloying as some wheat wines can be.

Pours a slightly hazy light copper. Interestingly I got almost zero head on the pour but there is quite a decent amount of lacing being left behind as drunk. Aromas of sweet caramel malts, some molasses, and maybe a hint of white wine. Tastes are in the area of red fruit peels, and caramel. Fairly sweet. I get no hop balance to any of this at all. Overall, one of Beau’s more hoity toity offerings, but I’m glad I tried one, as it is worth a try.

Taste is dry of well starts off like peppery firey spice some chardonnay taste, barrel and citrus(orange/lemon)drys out little sticky on lips. Little burn in belly. Some weird little painfull feeling hits throat and better then a barley wine but not super awsome. would work better on a colder day. spciy citrus chardanny.

Bottle - 600ml. Hazy golden/orange body with a thin white foamy/creamy head. Fresh malty/hoppy aroma with herbal, oaky, white wine, and citrusy hints. Alcohol is very well hidden. Its robust hoppy taste carries malty, oaky, grainy, and herbal notes. Ends with a long bitter/woody finish. Interesting.

Apr 28, 2014. 600mL bottle from LCBO. Apricots, grapefruit and sweetness in nose. Golden orange colour. White head. Nice lacing. Touch of hops, sweetness and a bit of straw in flavours. This is actually quite nice.

Bottle: Poured a clear medium golden color ale with a relatively small foamy head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma of sweet wheat malt notes with some residual sugars notes also perceptible. Taste is also dominated by caramelized wheat malt notes with a little bit of residual sugar notes and light boozy notes. I can’t say that the white wine barrel were detectable. Body was full for style with good carbonation and a little bit boozy. Overpriced for sure with barrel-aging notes hardly detectable; I will probably skip out next time I see this on the shelves.

600 mL bottle from the LCBO, served in a stem glass. Pours clear orange-golden with a small white head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a small amount of fine lace. The nose has big notes of pineapple and tropical fruit, along with citrus, white wine, oak, caramel and subtle grassy hops. The flavour is medium sweet throughout with a big fruity, pineapple character. To this are added notes of chardonnay, oak, passion fruit, soft citrusy and tropical fruity hops, subtle spice and a hint of woodsiness. The finish is long and moderately bitter with a spicy note. On the palate, it is medium in body with a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, an interesting barley wine that is surprisingly light in colour with prominent chardonnay notes. The chardonnay and oaky notes are wonderful, but the malts are a bit too syrupy and cloyingly sweet for my taste. 2014-05-10

Couleur ambrée agréable, légèrement voilée. Au nez, sauvignon blanc et raisin sec, fleures blanches et mangues. Au goût, acidité décevante masquant les arômes qui auraient pu être beaucoup plus subtiles et mieux équilibrées.
