A wheat wine, Ashnan displays great depth of character and complexity. It features bold tannic notes that integrate very well with the tropical fruit flavours. Aging in white wine barrels contributes wood and wine character to the noticeable alcohol presence, and enhances a dry finish. A beer with a wine-imposed identity crisis, Ashnan sits comfortably between, offering the best qualities of both. History & Style Beau’s LCBO Barrel Aged Beer Feature for spring 2014 is inspired by the art and mythology of ancient Mesopotamia. Ashnan was the Mesopotamian goddess of grain, an apt symbol for this barrel aged wheat wine. This rare and relatively new beer style is similar in strength to a barley wine, but with a higher ratio of wheat to barley for a more subtle, less malty flavour. Tasting Notes Ashnan wheat wine pours a light gold colour, and is moderately hopped. This lively, effervescent golden ale abounds in tropical fruit flavours, notably pineapple. The wine-like character is pronounced, with buttery chardonnay aromas giving way to oakiness. The finish is gently warming. Couleur ambrée agréable, légèrement voilée. Au nez, sauvignon blanc et raisin sec, fleures blanches et mangues. Au goût, acidité décevante masquant les arômes qui auraient pu être beaucoup plus subtiles et mieux équilibrées.

Bottle explodes with carbonation and doesn’t stop for 10 mins. Pours straw yellow with a large pillowy white head. Aroma is sweet white wine, wheat and oak. Taste is a bit boozy, wheat and tropical fruit. Palate is dry and oaky.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2014 Scent of hops, citrus, and ginger. Clear gold colour. Flavour of orange, malt, molasses, and maple syrup. Medium body with low carbonation. Really tasty! I?d definitely buy again!

Bottle. Poured pale yellow, fairly hazy. Lovely rocky white head with lots of sticky lacing. Aroma was slightly citric, sweet, very much like white wine. Taste is similar, like a heavier chardonnay. Dry finish slightly astringent.

2014-03-21. Lightly hazy bright orange body wiht a modest white head that fades. 3+ Aroma is surprisingly mild, lightly fruity vinous character. The flavour is similar, with a vinous alcoholic character, mild grains below. The chardonnay character comes out a bit more as you go but still less so than I would like. Average bodied palate, light carbonation. Enjoyable, I liked the vinous quality, but I would like it to better show off the barrel. Bottle from the LCBO, shared by GregClow

600 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear deep golden with a small white head. Aroma: Quite sweet and malty, lots of melanoidins, definitely white wine character, a little booze, a bit of spicy lemon. Palate: Medium body, low carbonation. Flav.: Similar to the nose, the white wine comes through more and the maltiness is in the background, more booze than the nose, a lot of white wine; dry with pretty good bitterness and a boozy, white wine and restrained malt finish.

Drinkable. Not really a winner in my books.

Hazy orange, small off white head. Aroma of sweet wheat, yeast, herbal, floral hops, and some bread. Thick mouth feel, soft carb. The finish is sweet, a little woody, with tropical fruit notes, and some flowery hops. Very interesting.

A very pale golden pour with a thick white head. The nose is softly fruity - some light grapey sweetness but also a little bit of soft spice and a very light hint of tartness. There is a certain emptyness to the flavour that is really hard to describe. There is a light malt base but there isn’t a whole lot of fullness or character to it. Not much hoppiness to speak of, low esters and a fairly simple malt profile. As it warms you get a bit more sweetness and malt character but it’s quite muted. I can’t say it’s bad, but there’s not a whole lot of there there.

[Bottle (600ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o GregClow] Pours a hazy orange with an average size diminishing frothy white head. Aroma and flavour of wood, herbal hops, bready malt, a bit of alcohol and vinous notes. Medium bodied. Not what I expected from a Wheat Wine but I liked it.

600ml bottle from the LCBO. Pours a slighgtly hazy pale amber with a two finger pillowy head that slowly recedes leaving nice lace. Nose is strongly oak and wine with yeast and some toffee with a muted citrus. Sweet malt at the front is quickly overtaken with a grape tartness and then a citrus bitterness with grapefruit and pineapple with the finish returning to a light tartness. Medium sticky mouth and the long tart finish drinks more like a wine. Lots going on here.
