COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This strong & dark beer, inspired by the Alfred bog, is our very first seasonal offering. Featuring bog myrtle, or sweet gale, harvested from the wilds of northern Quebec. This ancient herb was used in brewing hundreds of years ago and offers bitterness, a sweet aroma and herbal spicy notes.

Bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jerc & tupalev -- courtesy of GregClow. Pours a deep ruby-brown with an average size lasting off-white head. Aroma has some fruit, caramel malt and light spices. Flavour of caramel malt, herbal notes, spices and a decent bitter finish. Average bodied. Nice, this was way better then I expected -- kudos to Beau’s.

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2012 2012-11-29. Hazy dark brown body with a nice tan head and lace. 3+ Sweet mild aroma light malt, sort of muted spice touches. 6+ Mild flavour of sweet malt, muted fruit and soft spice that may have been subliminal. 3++ Smooth average bodied palate. Enjoyable but a bit too mild overall. 6/3/6/3/12+ On cask? at Amsterdam Movember Event

2008-05-01. Dark brown body with a nice tan head. (3+) Pleasant aroma is brown ale-esque. Light herbal-greenery notes (presumably the bog myrtle?), spice, dusty malt notes in the back. (6+) Sweet malty flavour with light notes of sugar or caramel. Modest herbal finish, light spice. Smooth palate is slightly fuller than average. (3+) I like it, I don’t love it, partly because of the herbal nature which I find I like more or less at various points throughout the glass. Still, overall its a pretty solid effort with more flavour than than their flagship brew. Nice. 7/3/7/3/15 3.5 Bottle shared by GregClow<P> "That should be their slogan. Front Line Assembly... Bottle (750ml ceramic swing-top). Shared by GregClow with blankboy, jerc and tupalev. Deep mahogany with a solid beige creamy head. Dry medium-deep roast cereal grain with some dry floral/herbal bitterness. Taste follows, quite sweet caramel malt with some raisin and light nutshell and wildflower bitterness - on the light side, not boozy, subtle .... Average body, smooth and soft, gently bitter in the finish. A light, roasty, cold-weather treat - my hat is off to you, Beaus - well done!

myrtle is lemony and adds a citrus tang to tea. As a hop replacement, this is odd and different and queer. Dark brown with off-white soapy head, and lacey. Horse smell in there, vegetable aroma and in taste. Medium mouthfeel and aggressive carbonation.

Growler from the brewery, about a week "old"-It’s nice to have contacts in the Ottawa area.Decants a deep, clouded brown with a thin beige ring of head. The nose is certainly malt forward, and hints at dark rye bread, dark fruit and lots of spice. This is certainly sweet, but I’m not sure if it is from the malts or from the sweet gale. Either way it is pleasant. Fruity, quite spicy, almost savory. The alcohol content is not noticeable, and this beer finishes softly with the low carbonation. Spiced, sweet lingering aftertaste. Quite a treat.

UPDATED: FEB 6, 2013 Growler from the brewery, courtesy of my buddy Jay. Spicy nose, along with lots of malt - nice. Neat appearance - very dark brown, hazy and murky - very little head. Taste is good - reminded me instantly of Anchor Our Special Ale in its spiciness - it would have been more appropriate to drink this in the Winter than outside on the first great day of the year! Sweet malty brown ale with a neat original bit of spiciness - good effort Beau’s.

Draught @ beerbistro: Dayna’s Beer of the Moment, and highly recommended by our server. He gave us the whole background on the bog myrtle and we couldn’t resist. Comes quite dark, red in colour, decent foamy off-white head. Aroma was complex with lots of spice, to be honest I had no notepad and I chased it with a few more, so trying to remember the subtle nuances ain’t happenin’. I can tell you that the flavour was quite nice, very reminiscent of Maudite, but with no aftertaste to speak of. Quick hit of bitterness on the tongue, but quickly makes way for a nice subtle sweetness, slight watery, lots of spice and pepper. It’s actually very interesting and our entire party of three all enjoyed it thoroughly. Good work, guys!

I got a bottle of ceramic swing-tops from the back of the brewer’s truck, so I guess I’ll be the first to rate it! This is a highly unusual beer, and I don’t really have a frame of reference for it. Dark red with a huge, foamy head. Definitely a funky, herbal, and spicy characteristic to the aroma: a lot of people detected nutmeg, but there was also an earthy, forest-floor note to it. The flavour is extremely mild and "short": you get a quick shot of malty sweetness with some of those spice and leafy flavours, almost like Dr. Pepper...but this beer was unusual in that it not only has very little in the way of finish, I didn’t notice much of a middle. Maybe sweet gale had a numbing effect on my tongue. All in all, a pleasant drink and an interesting experiment. A good session beer to share.
