COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This strong & dark beer, inspired by the Alfred bog, is our very first seasonal offering. Featuring bog myrtle, or sweet gale, harvested from the wilds of northern Quebec. This ancient herb was used in brewing hundreds of years ago and offers bitterness, a sweet aroma and herbal spicy notes.

Sweet and herbal. Lack of hops is obvious and distinctive. If you crave a hoppy beer this one won’t do it, but it’s a very interesting candidate for when in a curious mood.

Glass bottle from the LCBO. Pours a coppery red with a little head that dissipates nearly immediately. Smell is sweet and a bit floral, definite caramel coming through with maybe a tiny bit of cinnamon. Palate is perfect for me, some carbonation that lingers a bit but provides a nice and not overly harsh sensation on the palate. Taste is pretty good, medium sweetness and a little bitterness, definitely goes more towards the sweet side. The added spices are definitely noticeable and very interesting. Can’t say I’ve ever had bog myrtle or sweet gale before. Aftertaste is a bit sweet, but disappears quickly. A decent beer overall.

Appearance: copper red, tiny whispy white head. Aroma: slightly sweet, some caramel, malt, a little floral. Flavour: sweet, floral, a little hoppy, nice underlining malt. Quite simple and pleasant.

Clear mid-brown with just a little head. The main reaction we had was "weird". The beer backbone is solid - a funky/caramelly/raisiny thing - but nothing particularly intense, to give room for the bog myrtle to come through. And come through it does! It sneaks in subtly with its vegetal/seaweed character, but by the finish it’s the headliner. So whether or not you like bog myrtle is going to go a long way in determining whether or not you like this. And I found it a little too vegetal, too mouth-puckering. And really odd.

Bottle: Poured a clear dark brown color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and no lacing. Aroma consists of light sugar and caramel notes with light herb undertones. Taste is a mix between a solid malt backbone with some herbs and some light candi sugar. Body is fuller then average with low carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting though some additional carbonation would have helped.

Tap at Volo. Very cloudy amber pour, thin white head. Aroma is pretty yeasty, almost a dunkel character. Little bit floral, nutmeg and sweet maltiness. Medium body. Flavour is bready, little bit nutty and some molasses. Clean finish. Nothing extreme going on here but nice balanced brew.

#oncask at Cest’What What. Pours a cloudy dark ambar colour with a small foamy off white head. A bit cold, so not much aroma to start with. Flavours are muted but caraway seed / mint com through. Definetly something vegetal happening here. Some lace, almost no bitter, lingering herbs. Interesting beer.

Ginger, sage, wheat, pumpkin, cinnamon on the nose. Pours a dark amber with a persistent creamy head. A very crisp sensation on the palate. Taste’s like a gingerbread house. If one could ’drink’ a gingerbread house.

Pours a hazy amber with a small, tan head. Nose is very spicy and herbal. Dark fruit, red licorice, raspberry, yeast funk, brown sugar. Mouth feel is chewy with medium carbonation. Taste is cherry, raspberry, grass, herbal, green apple, stale gummy bears, and burnt toast. Finishes slightly bitter and dry; vinous, grassy and sour. Unique brew that gives off a holiday vibe without turning to cinnamon and ginger.

600 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a cloudy rusty brown with fairly large light tan head. Aroma of Belgian yeast - spice/fruit - with an interesting earthy herbal character that must be the myrtle. Flavour has lots of the same presumably myrtle note with apple/pear, bit of banana, bread and spice. Carbonation is rather light. I enjoyed this.
