COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This strong & dark beer, inspired by the Alfred bog, is our very first seasonal offering. Featuring bog myrtle, or sweet gale, harvested from the wilds of northern Quebec. This ancient herb was used in brewing hundreds of years ago and offers bitterness, a sweet aroma and herbal spicy notes.

Sampled at Mondial: Puts a turbid rusty-brown ale in the glass, small 1finger tan cap laces modestly.. Lightly carbonated. Pungent aroma: musty-toffee-citrusy-floral, dried fruit-herbs, spices, smoked almonds...wonderful mélange of aromas. Like a herbal brown ale. Flavor profile is almost replica of the aroma but more intense: toasty-nutty-toffee malts provide a base to balance off lemony-herbal bittering and a wonderful complexity of musty-spicy-malty-fruity-nutty flavors....long wet finish. This has a wonderfully quirky complexity that is sure to be misunderstood by unseasoned palates but for those who can appreciate the melding of a number of uncommon complimentary flavors, this is a brew you can relish and not be shy about having a couple.

600 ml bottle from les arpents verts A: herbacy, with some earthy notes, red fruits. app: clear reddish brown with thick and lasting white head. Good lacing. T/p: med body with light acidic finish. Moderate high carbonation. O: good. Not a fan off gruit beers. This one is in the upper range of the one I had before.

Deep clear brown red, ring white foam. Mild aromas that are sweet fruity and flowery, lemon. Taste follows the aromas yet more powerfully with added cherry and woody spice, sarsaparilla, violets and herbs. Well integrated and tasty.

600 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours barely translucent dark coppery orange with moderate (fizzy) creamy-ish off-white head. The aroma’s indeed kinda boggy, reminding me of bittersweet bog berries with some kind of candi sugary character. Tastes pretty sweet... Rather strange bitter character I can only associate with something boggy-ish - I reckon that’s the myrtle (which, though, as I understand is not really a bog plant). Rather fizzy carbonation and lightish medium body. Interesting to say the least... But not something to down a whole pintful. Or a 600 ml bottle, for that matter. A 5 oz sample is better I guess : )

Bottle given to me by my colleague’s boyfriend back in Canada that I later shared at the Downtown Inn post-grand tasting party for RBWG. Full, tannish orange pour. Nose of pleasant caramel and cereal notes. Pleasant flavor has caramel malt, cereal, slight earthiness, and a surprise tartness. Lip smacking good. The tartness is sure a surprise in a good way. Crazy.

Has a murky brown like colour, Aromas of fresh pine and spruce, malted and caramel candy. Has a sour taste profile with a tangy zesty finish which is surprising given the aroma on the nose.

UPDATED: APR 24, 2013 Gave my friend a blind tasting of this one, told him it was an IPA. Fantastic brew, and it’s just wonderful to see such experimentation from an Ontarian brewer. This is the type of beer our ancestors drank and it’s a real shame that it’s disappeared for so long. Thanks, guys, for bringing it back; I plan on sharing it with more friends in the future. The herbs are quite the shock at first, but after a few sips it just glides right down... lovely complex taste just mulling in your mouth. The head is just beautiful. I know it’s based on the local ales, but if I could compare this with one style it would be the strong Belgians.

Brownish pour, decent sized head. Muted aroma, carael, herbs, (myrtle?). Roasted malt, caramel, herbs and spice, lemon, actually quite different, if not complex. Medium body. Definitely unique.
