COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This strong & dark beer, inspired by the Alfred bog, is our very first seasonal offering. Featuring bog myrtle, or sweet gale, harvested from the wilds of northern Quebec. This ancient herb was used in brewing hundreds of years ago and offers bitterness, a sweet aroma and herbal spicy notes.

600ml bottle. Pours Hazy brown/orange with average tan head. Vegetal, malty, tangy nose. Rather odd but not in a bad way. Sourish on the palate with vegetal wooden notes and a lemony zing.

Bottle given to me by my colleague’s boyfriend back in Canada that I later shared at the Downtown Inn post-grand tasting party for RBWG. Full, tannish orange pour. Nose of pleasant caramel and cereal notes. Pleasant flavor has caramel malt, cereal, slight earthiness, and a surprise tartness. Lip smacking good. The tartness is sure a surprise in a good way. Crazy.

UPDATED: FEB 6, 2013 Growler from the brewery, courtesy of my buddy Jay. Spicy nose, along with lots of malt - nice. Neat appearance - very dark brown, hazy and murky - very little head. Taste is good - reminded me instantly of Anchor Our Special Ale in its spiciness - it would have been more appropriate to drink this in the Winter than outside on the first great day of the year! Sweet malty brown ale with a neat original bit of spiciness - good effort Beau’s.

Growler from the brewery, about a week "old"-It’s nice to have contacts in the Ottawa area.Decants a deep, clouded brown with a thin beige ring of head. The nose is certainly malt forward, and hints at dark rye bread, dark fruit and lots of spice. This is certainly sweet, but I’m not sure if it is from the malts or from the sweet gale. Either way it is pleasant. Fruity, quite spicy, almost savory. The alcohol content is not noticeable, and this beer finishes softly with the low carbonation. Spiced, sweet lingering aftertaste. Quite a treat.

Draught, 20 ounces, at The cottage and kitchen, April 11 2008; eye: dirty brown with a reddish hue, opaque creamy beige head that falls rapidly, light lacing; nose: sweet gale, I suppose, caramelized malt, floral, fruity, dusty, perfumy, light spices; mouth: dusty, sweet gale, caramelized malt, perfumy, floral, fruity, a bit aggressive on swallowing but finale is enjoyable, spices (pepper), basement, caramel, finale in sweet gale with a good presence of caramelized malt, nice balance, silky, medium body, mildly sweet, lightly bitter, slight astringency, rather carbonated, reminiscent of an "old ale", creamy; overall: nice surprise FRANÇAIS En fût, 20 onces, chez The cottage & kitchen, 11 avril 2008; oeil : brune sale avec une teinte rougeâtre, opaque, mousse crémeuse beige qui tombe plutôt rapidement, légère dentelle; nez : myrique baumier, j’imagine, malt caramélisé, floral, fruitée, poussiéreuse, parfumée, léger épices; bouche : poussiéreuse, myrique baumier, malt caramélisé, parfumée, floral, fruitée, p’tite agression lorsque j’avale mais la finale est agréable, épices (poivre), cave, caramel, finale en myrique baumier avec une bonne présence de malt caramélisé, bel équilibre, soyeuse, corps moyen, moyennement sucrée, légèrement amère, très légère astringence, plutôt carbonatée, un peu « old ale », crémeuse; en résumé : belle surprise

Glass bottle from the LCBO. Pours a coppery red with a little head that dissipates nearly immediately. Smell is sweet and a bit floral, definite caramel coming through with maybe a tiny bit of cinnamon. Palate is perfect for me, some carbonation that lingers a bit but provides a nice and not overly harsh sensation on the palate. Taste is pretty good, medium sweetness and a little bitterness, definitely goes more towards the sweet side. The added spices are definitely noticeable and very interesting. Can’t say I’ve ever had bog myrtle or sweet gale before. Aftertaste is a bit sweet, but disappears quickly. A decent beer overall.

600ml bottle. Pours a hazy reddish brown, rather dark, moderate short-lived tan head. Looked kind of like a Belgian ale. Aroma was a little yeasty and dusty, but mostly dark fruity malt. Taste is tart and herbal with a mild sweetness, salt and yeast. Medium body, decent carbonation. Overall, very unique. Kind of an herbal Belgian ale.

Pours a copper colour with a beige frothy head that last a while, but does not stick to the glass much. Mild beautiful aromas found in a Belgian ale with soft spices and yeast. Medium-bodied. Roasted malts that taste more sweet than burnt with notes of bananas in the finish. Pretty cool that they use wild harvested bog myrtle instead of hop. Nice and easy drinking spicy ale, but does not warm up much for those winter day (or nights). Still, a pleasant different brew that is mild overall (which it was stronger in all aspect).

bottle. Pours deep ruby, head quickly disappeared. Aroma of banana, yeast, malts. Taste is sweet, almost a cross between a dunkelweisse and a dubbel. Interesting and good.
