COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This strong & dark beer, inspired by the Alfred bog, is our very first seasonal offering. Featuring bog myrtle, or sweet gale, harvested from the wilds of northern Quebec. This ancient herb was used in brewing hundreds of years ago and offers bitterness, a sweet aroma and herbal spicy notes.

Bouteille 600ml.

600ml bottle from the LCBO. Pours a hazy dark brown with a huge beige head that takes a while to settle. Nose is yeast and cloves. taste is quite spicy but not as clove heavy as the nose would indicate and a cola like sweetness.. Medium body with lively carbonation.

Muted aroma, carael, herbs, (myrtle?). Roasted malt, caramel, herbs and spice, lemon, actually quite different, if not complex. Medium body. Definitely unique.

From County General in Toronto. Very cloudy, almost opaque amber-orange with fizzy foamy off-white head. Smells of lime, tangerine, musty sweet malt, bit of cinnamon. Quite musty in a way that comes off as un-fresh. Taste is acidic, medium sweetness, light bitterness, tart lemony finish. Body is acidic, fizzy but in a slightly flat way, sweet. Like a Saison, or hoppy spiced orange juice.

Pours a clear dark copper with a thin offwhite head on top that leaves some lacing. Nose is of spices and herbs with a light reminescence of a pumpkin beer but with no nutmeg. Light smoke aspect to it, too. Taste is lightly sweet but all the spices and the light acidic edge make it all palatable. Flavors are once again of spices and herbs, mission accomplished. Body is light and carbonation high, mouthfeel lightly watery. Bog water indeed. Overall a fair gruit but just like pumpkin beers it’s a "once a year" kind of affair with me.

Bottle at Tom’s place. Hazy amber brown pour with thin white head. Aroma is leafy, lots of fresh coriander, very grassy, herbal, parsley. Taste is herbal, leafy with light sweetness. Palate is med bodied with med-light carbonation.

Bottle (600 ml). Split 2-ways with JulienHuxley.

Appearance: Slightly hazy reddish brown with a small to medium persistent beige head and some lacing.

Aroma: Coriander, quite herbal forward, light caramel and light citrusy notes.

Taste: Moderate sweetness. Quite spicy. Herbal presence, caramel, light citrusy notes and light bitterness.

Palate: Medium body. Moderate to medium carbonation. Lingering spicy finish.

Overall: Not the kind of beer I like because it’s dominated by spices. Not awful, but average drinkability at best. Ok.

I got a bottle of ceramic swing-tops from the back of the brewer’s truck, so I guess I’ll be the first to rate it! This is a highly unusual beer, and I don’t really have a frame of reference for it. Dark red with a huge, foamy head. Definitely a funky, herbal, and spicy characteristic to the aroma: a lot of people detected nutmeg, but there was also an earthy, forest-floor note to it. The flavour is extremely mild and "short": you get a quick shot of malty sweetness with some of those spice and leafy flavours, almost like Dr. Pepper...but this beer was unusual in that it not only has very little in the way of finish, I didn’t notice much of a middle. Maybe sweet gale had a numbing effect on my tongue. All in all, a pleasant drink and an interesting experiment. A good session beer to share.
