Our annual feBREWary coffee + beer collaboration with Ottawa’s Bridgehead Roastery returns in 2014 with Collabrrrewnaut, a coffee-infused classic Bohemian Pilsner. This beer was lagered for six weeks then cold-infused with a Bridgehead Peruvian micro lot espresso roast, to create a harmonious juxtaposition of light and dark.

History & Style
The world’s first blond lager, Bohemian pilsners were first brewed in the mid-19th century. The style originated in the City of Plzen (Pilsen), part of the present-day Czech Republic. Known for its light, clear colour and clean, crisp finish, our Collabrrrewnaut sends the pilsner brewing tradition hurtling space years ahead of its time with a espresso-roast coffee infusion.

Tasting Notes
Collabrrrewnaut has an herbal, spicy noble hop aroma, with a subtle yet ever-present espresso note that lingers like the scent of coffee in a busy Czech café. The beer possesses a mild bitterness, with a clean dry finish. Restrained nuances courtesy of the coffee suggest dried figs, nutty richness and chocolate as they intermingle with the classic Pilsner style.

Bottle. Opens with a loud fizz and a fair bit of foam coming out of the bottle, giving quick concern that it might be infected. Pours a nice orange-gold with a bit of haze and a moderately large off-white head. Aroma is an interesting combination of grassy pilsner and a good hit of coffee - and no hint of infection, thankfully. The aroma combination is odd at first, but starts to come together into something pretty nice. Flavour is the same - takes a few minutes to wrap my tongue around the mix of bready malt, noble hops and smooth coffee, but once I get into the groove, it surprisingly works. Not sure I’d want to drink it every day, but it’s also not the trainwreck it could’ve been.

Fresh Saaz hops aroma with some hay. Almost clear gold under a persistent white, dense cover. Coffee flavour balanced the spicy and hay hops. Light body, medium carbonation, moderately spicy finish.

Pale golden pour with a thick white head. The aroma is lightly coffeeish but there is a definite zesty hop aroma as well that makes an appearance. There is a little bit of soft sweetness and a fairly fresh hop profile. The flavour is slightly muddled because I just don’t know how to process "coffee + pilsner". I get a little bit of DMS that is slightly distracting but it’s not terrible. I honestly don’t know what to think of this beer. I feel like the base beer might be solid - the coffee is a bit of a distraction.

On tap at Stack. Pours a clear golden colour with average-sized white head. Aroma is on the mild side with biscuit, grass and a subtle coffee note that emerges as it warms. Coffee really comes through in the flavour - not overpowering but distinctly espresso - with some underlying biscuity malt and light grassy/spicy hoppiness. Some lingering coffee-ish bitterness. Quite unique and rather enjoyable.

A golden pils with a thin white head. In aroma, pleasant coffee and biscuit malt, grassy German hops, light metallic notes, overall, nice. In mouth, a nice crisp biscuit malt with grassy German hops, and light coffee notes, well balanced with pils. On tap at Rochester Pub.

On tap at bar hop. Clear golden pour, frothy white head. Typical grassy, straw notes on the aroma, with a very tantalizing roasted coffee bean. Smooth, medium mouthfeel. Nicely balanced. It’s not powerful, but the coffee is there. Sessionable. I was hoping for a little more flavour, but this is still a fine variation on the style.

[Draught at DeSotos] Pours a clear golden-orange with an average size semi-lasting frothy white head. Mild but pleasant aroma of sweet bready malt, coffee and grassy hops -- interesting. Flavour: Nice. More coffee then I expected but it works, a decent amount of grassy hops and some light sweetness -- it’s really drinkable. Long-ish light to moderate bitter finish. Medium bodied. A nice twist on a Pilsner.
