Pours silky black with a moderate light brown head. Aroma is sweet bourbon, dry oak, light roast and a little dark chocolate. Taste is a sweet sting of the bourbon treatment. it overshadows the nuances of the Helmut which I’m disappointed as Helmut is a really nice beer. I might have liked less time in the barrel. Dry palate from the oak and a touch of coffee in the end.

Cask at Beau’s Oktoberfest 2015. An orange tinted dark brown with a short lived beige head. Aroma is smokey, oak, chocolate. Flavor is smokey, chocolate, coffee, roast. Finish is wood, bourbon. Some booze, too. Medium to full body, average carbonation.

on tap at beau’s oktoberfest 2015 - craft haus. hazy/cloudy dark brown with a light beige cap, some retention and lacing. lots of bourbon, redwine as well, sweetish burnt nuttiness, spicy red fruitiness - hitn of acidity, cherry brettiness, olives, minerals. light carbonation, medium body - oily; semi-sweet spicy-bourbony finish. original schwarzbier is way lost in this bourbon overdose and early brett infection. but it’s still very nice, swill-wise.

Roasty smell. Pluses is the big roast, negative is the sourness which cannot be intended. Light brown, lace.

On tap at National Capital Beer Festival. Smoke and meatiness seems lighter then in the original - more balanced with some vanilla and oak yet there is still some heat from the booze. Black with a creamy light brown head that cascades beautifully. Seems fresh yet muted; love the interplay between the smoke and the barrel. Moderate body and mild carbonation. Slight sweet smoke, overall mild with some bitterness and a dry finish.
