Nice altbier. I lived near Dusseldorf for 1 year and am a fan of altbier. There is nothing extraordinary about this altbier yet it is a solid reproduction of the style. As someone who has live a long time in Germany and tried many of the German styles of beer I am often disappointed in the attempts at various German styles from foreign breweries. This might not win any awards for best altbier in Germany but everyone would think it is a good standard altbier and would not be identified as a foreign attempt either. With so many failures in Canada and elsewhere to brew a particular style of German beer one has to respect a successful attempt.

Pours a rich clear copper colour, with a huge frothy head. Aroma notes include grains, caramel, some citrus notes. Tasting notes include caramel, toffee, nutty creaminess, and a slight bitterness. This is a wonderful beer! Very drinkable, and great for watching hockey games with!!

(Rating #4758)

Clear copper pour, white head. Aroma is toasty, caramel, subtle cherry. Taste is really malty, caramel but still crisp. Palate is medium bodied but still quite refreshing. Really good alt.

600ml bottle, amber-copper color, with a bubbly beige head, mild grainy toasted, biscuity, caramel malt nose, with a nutty, toffee accent, and a light floral earthy leafy, grassy hop note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice toasted, caramelized, biscuity malt, toffeish character, with a light mineral water, earthy flowery leafy, grassy hop flavour, with a faint nutty, toffeeish undertone, leading towards a toasty, caramel maltiness, earthy leafy, grassy hop bittering finish.

Crisp hop aroma with a touch of sweet malt. Medium hop bite with some malt balance. Nice and easy.

On tap @ Wellington Gastropub Ottawa. Pours a clear amber that leans towards a ruby red. Small white head. Aroma is a biscuity caramel malt with some notes of ripe berry. Taste is rich biscuity malt with a delicate hint of sweetness. Nicely balanced with a dry subtle bitterness. Mouthfeel is rich and almost crunchy with a nice round impact on the palate. Moderate carbonation. This is a great beer. The only thing I would improve is to curtail some of the bitter/alcohol finish.
