Gilgamesh old ale has been aged in rum barrels while resting on its yeast in storage, which contributes to a full-bodied and malty character. Complex fruit esters reminiscent of figs and dates add to the richness and sweetness of this dark, strong wine-like ale. History & Style Beau’s LCBO Barrel Aged Beer Feature for spring 2014 is inspired by the art and mythology of ancient Mesopotamia. Gilgamesh, a legendary king of Mesopotamia, is the central character in The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the earliest surviving works of literature. Deliberately long-aged, the brew team took inspiration for Gilgamesh from several different versions of the robust, malty Old Ale style. Tasting Notes Sweet rich malt and dried fruit aromas are abundant and are reflected in the flavour. Date and fig-like notes merge with some baking-spice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, and just a touch of earthiness. Wood-aged characters including vanillin are subtle but present, as is a dark rum undertone. Gilgamesh displays well-integrated alcohol warmth.

Single from the LCBO with a paper label and tag. Pours a deep copper colour with a smaller frothy beige head, decent retention, but not much sticking to the glass (a little foam). Caramel malt nose with heavy raisin notes, wood from the barrel and spices from the rum itself. Lots of dark fruits (raisins, figs, plums) in the taste, with some molasses, caramel and spices. Mild rum lingers on the tongue in the aftertaste. Alcohol well-hidden with average carbonation, a smooth mouthfeel, but quite on the wet side.

Bottle - 600ml. Cloudy brown body with a thin beige foamy head. Rich malty/hoppy aroma with oaky, rum, and caramel hints. Alcohol is well hidden. Its robust malty taste carries hoppy, oaky, and rum notes. Ends with a warming bittersweet finish. Well done.

Couleur brune avec des reflets rouges et un mince col mousseux assez résistant. Nez de bois, de rhum d’épices et de quelques fruits confits. En bouche le meme mélange assez complexe. Corps moyen a élevé. Carbonation moyenne. Une bière interessante!

Pours an opaque dark brown verging on black. Moderate slightly off-white head that settles down rapidly. Almost zero lacing being left behind. The first aroma that jumps out at me is dryer lint. Seriously. There are also hints of raisins and red grapes. On the palate it is fairly sweet , and actually kind of tastes like a Dubbel with raisin and grape notes. There might also be the merest hint of chocolate rum balls. Overall, not my favourite of this Beau’s series, but not bad at all.

Aucune amertume. Fiche technique Style: Old Ale Format: 600 ml Taux d?alcool : 8,9% Température: 5°C - 8°C IBU: 30

3 finger head black, brown and red at bottom. Smells of spice, pepper wood, smoke, rum, blue cheese, wine, fruty. Taste starts bubbly & foamy a tad wet then drys out nd warms the body a little and has taste of what I smell. Wish it was less dry and more wetness to it and maybe a little less boozy and a bit less sweet. The more ya drink it warms ya up. booze pepery woody sweet rum taste wineish blue cheesy ale ish. It passes but there is better n worse.

Bottle, shared with phantomhennes, heavyleavy, and TvM at game night. Dark walnut brown with an average beige head. Lots of sweet dark malts here, molasses, figs, spicy nuances. Sweet but not big enough to be sticky. Actually quite nice.

Pours a clear dark brown with barely one finger of tan head. Aromas are of carmel, molasses, malt, brown sugar, flower and yeast. Strong flavours of caramel and molasis with dates, figs and hints of malt and yeast. I started to pick up some licorice after a while. This one has a moderate amount of carbonation. Overall this is an excellent old ale with awesome carmel and molasses flavours. They really did a good job with this one.

600 ml bottle at Urban Element Ottawa. Pours a deep ruby red with a small reddish/brown head. Aromas are caramel, black liquorice, burnt sugar, and chalk. Tastes are lightly bitter and oaky, and a little alcohol but the big 8.9% abc is hidden really well. Very smooth, rich, and creamy on the palate with an incredibly short finish. While I normally don’t enjoy barrel aged ales with big alcohol, Beaus has really outdone themselves with this one. Highly recommended.
