VeloVampire (483), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 16, 2009 750 ceramic bottle, courtesy of my bro - pours a clear, dark gold with a good thick white head. Faint, enjoyable aroma of apples, yeast, and sweet grain. Flavour mild but quaffable - some diacetyl lending buttered popcorn notes, along with a clean lager finish. Honest beer. Poured a slightly hazy golden yellow with an average white head. Aromas of grain, yeast, and hops. Initial flavour of sweet grains, gave way to a moderate bitter finish. A nice beer to try, but not something I would look for.
mullet2007 (198), St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada Nov 30, 2008 750ml ceramic bottle, pours a very slightly hazy straw colour with a very thin head. Nose is a little skunky and faintly spicy. Flavour is much the same. Not really skunky, but a tiny bit spicy. It’s a bit watery, in flavour and in the mouth. It has some sweet caramel notes especially as it warms up a bit. Carbonation is low but alright, and it is a bit watered down. rodenbach99 (675), Longueuil, Quebec, Canada Oct 19, 2008 bouteille de grès de 750ml, bière blonde avec une belle mousse, arôme de céréale, goût de malt agréable en bouche, ronde et efficace. When they brought this out in an authentic-style, Beau’s-branded, narrow vertical Kölsch glass, I knew these guys were serious about doing this right. It’s a straw-coloured beer with a billowy, constantly replenishing head. Malt is grainy, a bit sweet but not pils-like. Right at the edge of noticeability there’s a hint of floral, grassy hop. Flavour is sweet, with enough bitterness to make it crisp, quite clean with a Kölsch yeast note.
This is a well-done version of a style I find boring. I’m unlikely to order it again, but it will be successful and rightly so. It’s well-made craft beer. I wish people wouldn’t rate it so low just because it’s yellow. Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Sep 7, 2008 Objectively speaking:
Clean and refreshing ale despite the fact that we drank it at a rather high temperature.
I like:
Fun german grassy, herbal hops. Pleasant grainy, cerealic, hay-like malts. Well-assembled and clean.
I dislike:
Lacking the classic Kolsch tall head and vigorous foam. Not as crisp as it could be. Certainly nothing to write home here. MartinT (5026), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 7, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Surreptitious herbal hopping sneaks into clean straw flavors throughout this very drinkable but a tad underachieving Kölsch.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the clear pale blond.
-Some watery moments disappoint.
-The light hopping does provide bitterness in the finish, but it will never bother those who aren’t used to it. This is a very approachable ale for newbies.
-The slick cereal sweetness offers nice flavors, but these do not dwell in a compelling mouthfeel.
-This bottle was incredibly clean, so I guess they’ve solved the issues which plagued the first ratings for this beer. Great!
-I get the impression this is better on tap. Hope I can try it soon!
