Commercial Description:
Beau's flagship offering is Lug Tread Lagered Ale, named after the tire treads of a small tractor, a true symbol of Eastern Ontario. Golden-hued, crisp and finely balanced, Lug Tread is a tribute to “Kölsch” the classic beer of Cologne, Germany. Lug Tread is top fermented (like an ale) and then cold aged, or “lagered”, for a lengthy period. This gives it some light ale notes, complemented by a lager-like crispness.

Objectively speaking: Clean and refreshing ale despite the fact that we drank it at a rather high temperature.
I like: Fun german grassy, herbal hops. Pleasant grainy, cerealic, hay-like malts. Well-assembled and clean.
I dislike: Lacking the classic Kolsch tall head and vigorous foam. Not as crisp as it could be. Certainly nothing to write home here.

My Bottom Line:
Surreptitious herbal hopping sneaks into clean straw flavors throughout this very drinkable but a tad underachieving Kölsch.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the clear pale blond.
-Some watery moments disappoint.
-The light hopping does provide bitterness in the finish, but it will never bother those who aren’t used to it. This is a very approachable ale for newbies.
-The slick cereal sweetness offers nice flavors, but these do not dwell in a compelling mouthfeel.
-This bottle was incredibly clean, so I guess they’ve solved the issues which plagued the first ratings for this beer. Great!
-I get the impression this is better on tap. Hope I can try it soon!

Bottle.

750mL ceramic swing-top bottle from a trade with a friend. Awesome, awesome stuff. I didn’t know what to expect, a new style to me, and what with the lower ratings, but in all honesty this thing blew my mind right out of the water. Pours a beautiful hazy gold with a large white head that diminishes fast. The aroma is just delicious, all the straw and hay malts one could ever want, creamy sweetness (not at all cloying), with a subtle hint of mild hopping. The taste is even better. So incredibly smooooooooth! Straw, hay, barley husks, malty orgasmic deliciousness. The long lagering process makes this into an awesome beer with perfect smooth body. They must have tweaked the recipe. Anyone who can’t enjoy the subtleties of a beer like this is just plain stupid IMO. Finishes well with a nice dry little hop presence, and descending notes of indistinct sweet fruity elements. I really wish there were more examples of this style for me to delve into in my area. Maybe my palate is just screaming for something other than macro swill after a night of partying (last night, not this night), or maybe this is an incredibly delicious and well made beer.

I very interesting style of beer. I am really starting to enjoy it. Very refreshing. They need to get some 6-packs or something together for this at the LCBO. That 750ml clay bottle is just not worth the price.

App.: Clear light golden poor with a thin off-white head

Aromas: Canned Corn, honey, grass

Palate: Light bitter start with a quick crisp oily finish. Not to carbonated.

Flavors: Very fad, corn and grassy notes

Notes: Very fad but fresh, crisp and dry. Refreshing.

Huge 750ml bottle courtesy of GregClow. Pours a slightly hazy bubbly yellow-gold with an average size frothy white head. Aroma of grain, yeast, light grassy hops, floral notes, some sugary sweetness and honey -- not too bad actually. Flavour’s sweet and grainy along with grassy hops, pale malt, biscuit and honey -- a little bit too sweet for my liking. Light, short bitter finish. Average bodied. Not bad, definitely one of the better Lagers available locally -- though not something I would choose to order, it’s still something I could easily drink.

Kölsch-style beer that comes in a 750ml swing-top ceramic bottle (I think it was $7.50 - apparently the bottle is quite expensive to source & costs about four dollars from the supplier.) All in all I was not blown away, but then I don’t generally drink Kölsch and just really wanted to try it. This is a beer that would ultimately make sports fans happy, refreshing with somewhat short/strong sweetish grain flavors, restrained fruitiness and a finishing lager ’edge’. I went back to it a few times & then relinquished it to the other BBQ drinkers while I enjoyed a Rogue ESB and a Welty with my nicely grilled burg. I look forward to more trips to Köln to explore this often poorly-appreciated style while searching for unusually good examples. I also want to try the Beau’s on tap if possible. Not sure why we ’need’ this type of beer in Ontario, but keep up the creative efforts Beau’s and I will keep an eye on your progress.
