caledonian (367), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Mar 20, 2008 750ml ceramic? bottle. Average lagerish appearance. It doesn’t have that usual Ontario beer funk, better, but different. As the commercial description says, it’s fairly well balanced, hard to pick out anything worth noting. shintriad (698), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 19, 2008 Bottled. Pretty nice stuff...huge cloudy head (although maybe the narrow neck prevented me from pouring normally), a funky hops aroma and an extremely mild, yet somewhat earthy house character differentiate this from most ales. Definitely lager-like hop aromas with a soft maltiness that you usually get from a casked ale. I need to dry this in a draught though. Boutip (2335), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Mar 19, 2008 Bottle: Poured a deep clear golden color Kölsch with a big foamy head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma of unrefined grain and weird dry ester is not overly pleasant. Taste is a mix between rich medium sweet grains with again some dry ester. Full body with good carbonation is pleasant. I have to admit that this is not a style that I am overly knowledgeable about or that I appreciated a whole lot but I thought this was acceptable. tomthompson89 (1460), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 20, 2008 pale yellow color, decent foam, nose is meadow kinda bitter with an odd aftertaste decent but not a fave MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Feb 20, 2008 Updated: Feb 10, 2009On tap at pub italia- I was going to make my way out to the brewery, but the weather was just too bad, so I am glad I got to try this one anyway. Pours a sparkling gold body with a frothy white cap with long lived head. Nose is grassy with lemon rind, cookies, pale malts and fresh greens. Initially this one seemed to be weak in the flavour department, but it grew on me. Theres a fresh sharp grassy flavour with slightly fruity malty nuances and a huge punch of lemon and a great biscuit snap at the finish. This is actually very good. The finish is sharp with a good biscuit and lemon zing. KnN (715), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Feb 18, 2008 Had on tap at Pub Itialia in Ottawa. I only am able to get this when I come up north to visit friends, but I always look for this one. Yeah, it’s not the most complex interesting beer, but it has a great fresh slightly nuttty quality with a near perfect balance of hops and yeast. Pours a light yellow with a thin head. If this is what Kolsch is supposed to taste like, sign me up. pootzboy (1037), Hawgville, Ontario, Canada Sep 30, 2007 Draft fresh from the brewery:
What can I say about this subtle under-rated elixer? Certainly it’s a Canadian crafted Kolsch...but how many will recognize it as such and appreciate the delicate subtle complexity of this German cold aged ale?
I’m a fan of this arcane style but having never been to Cologne and being limited to poorly handled exported bottle samples or other North Americanized Kolsh approximations, it’s hard to say how Beau’s compares to the genuine ale of Cologne....all I can say is that it is delicate in complexity, has top tier German ingredients and is very tasty and drinkable due to the 45 day cold fermenting/aging cycle.
The Look: Tapped it puts a lightly hazed pale gold ale in my Kolsch stangen. proper 2 finger frothy white cap with moderate retention and fair lacing qualities.
The Aroma: Very light graininess, subtle apple aromas, light musty-woody tone from Hersbrucker hops, slight wine-like sulphur undertone from yeast....very dulcet aromas...true to style.
Soft rounded character, delicate flavour and balance, smooth delivery, crisp finish.
The profile: Light delicate graininess in the front is balanced by spicey-herbal perle hopping...middle develops light fruitiness, musty-woody tones over light grains...finish is crisp and clean slightly drying with a light hop "bite".
Impression: A very well made and subtly complex Kolsch-styled ale with soft flavourful character and great drinkability. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 23, 2007 On tap at the Clock Tower in Ottawa as a guest tap. Fresh. Pale yellow with a good head.Significant candy sugar aroma. Watery. A faint bitterness offsetting the taste of sugar and water. Drinkable.
