COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Wild Oats Series No. 15 A tribute to the Roggenbiers of Germany, but done with with a North American twist. Deep copper in colour, Mr. Hyde is a rye beer that has been hopped aggressively in the American vein. However, it utilizes German hops to provide bitterness, flavour and aroma, while the rye malt provides an additional spiciness.

Smells of honey. Taste is bitter with a little sourness and a light touch of honey. Strong malt flavor. A really well-crafted, interesting beer. Bottle at Castro’s.

Slightly clear copper colour with thick beige head that leaves a fair bit of lacing on the glass. Aroma of rye malts and floral hops and a hint of spice, muted at first, but increasing as the head slowly settles down. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, the taste is rye malts and earthy, slightly spicy peppers with a little citrus hops lurking in the background, but coming forward as the beer warms slightly. Long, balanced finish with bitter hops and earthy malts.

600ml bottle c/o G - thank you, G!!! (no, it’s not God. well, maybe it is - but I have no proof). Clear bright amber with a huge fluffy tan lasting head. Very acidic grain and herbally bitter aroma, a little fruity and nutty. Taste is more acidic and nutty, weird dry bitterness in the finish, like lemon, battery acid and nutshell - but I like it. Light body, massive astringency, solid carbonation and a long dry acidic palate-coating bitter finish - odd, pungent, good.

600ml bottle. Pours dark amber brown with large off-white head. Unfiltered; there is some sediment. Very low carbo. Aroma is faint, a little orange peel and a hint of soap. Taste is largely an earthy hop bitterness and rye bread. Little bit of caramel sweetness. Finish is mostly dry and body is full. Overall, much more interesting than the Jekyll.

Thanks to cfrancis for this one. Pours an amber color with an off white head and lots of sticky lace. Aroma of spicy rye malts, earthy hops, sweet toffee and floral esthers. Taste is spicy rye malts, toffee, earthy hops and a nice bitterness throughout. Finishes semi dry to dry this is one of the better rye ipa?s I?ve tasted.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2013 Bottle - pours a hazed copper-red with a decent 3 inger off white frothy cap that laces well. Aroma is modest but there is some spicy rye notes and light noble herbal notes - almost like a spicy Altbier. Flavour is intense but 2 dimensional - the big pearl hop infusion doesn’t obliterate the rye spiciness and other malts until the finish where the hops break away a bit and you get a malty-earthy discernment. An oddball brew but intense - a unique tale on a roggenbier that comes off like an Altbier in charcter - some will like it if they appreciate altbiers, I did.

Bouteille 600 ml. 7%.

600 mL bottle. Pours amber with a frothy white cap. Rye and hop spices intermingle with a hint of caramel malt sweetness, cedar, applesauce and prune fruit notes. Slightly sweet but reasonably balanced. Moderate body and carbonation level. Nice complexity.

Cask at C’est What - 11.95 a pint? Are you fucking kidding me! Anyway, now that I’ve got that out of the way, on to the beer itself. Aroma is quite earthy and spicy with a nice herbal hop aroma. There is an interesting sort of fruity character underneath that I can’t quite put my finger on - a little bit gruity. Fairly pronounced bitterness and a clean malt character with a touch of rye spice coming through on the back. Quite an interesting brew - but there’s no forgiving that price. Hoppy enough to be an IPA
